Honestly, a good little book for putting on the back of the toilet.Interesting topics, nice little anecdotes, and a quick read. Good for hanging out on the porcelain throne for a bit and losing yourself in the stories.A few stories caused me to bookmark and research further, which takes you down the rabbit hole that is Wikipedia.Good read. Nice and compact book too.

Had fun reading this compilation of 100 oddities. Reminds me of " Ripleys believe it or not". Two of the surprises- there were 6 presidents prior to George Washington. And there was a Japanese "Schindler " during WWIi, an ambassador to Eastern European country who handed out 5000 visas to help Jews escape. Lighter reading than I expected, almost like a comic book.

I bought this book as a present for my daughter's 10th birthday. She loves history (as do I) and I thought that the stories would be nice quick reads at bedtime. Each story is a very short very brief synopsis of an event with a couple of photos and a couple more related snipets. It does make you want to google the event to find out more information. I would prefer that it included more information about each event. Each story is about a 1 minute read, rather than the 5-10 that I expected. Also, it is fun, but take it with a grain of salt. I found some storys that are well known tales, but are not accurate - such as the Pilgrims landing at Plymouth and did not continue on to Virginia because they were out of beer.It is a nice little book for quick tales that you can use to have fun and get and interest for history. Then pick the subjects to look into further on the internet.

This book is an easy and interesting read. It has an interesting perspective on several historical subjects. It's always nice to read a book where it is easy to stop here and there. Sometimes you just don't have hours and hours to devote to sitting and reading. This book is good for reading for a short period of time, maybe stopping for a while, and taking up again a little while later. Very informative.

This is a great little coffee table book or better yet, a gift to someone hospitalized. This is my forth purchase for friends.

These are the worst “secrets” I have ever seen. 🙄🙄🙄. It’s more like a book of origins not really secrets. I would buy a different book if your looking for “secrets”. This is all about when items were first invented (I.e. lipstick, leg shaving, shoes, toilet paper, etc.). It’s a hard pass on this one!

I really hoped these would be exciting, or at least uncommon stories, but they are generally stories any student of history would know. The writing is commonplace. My kids found them exceedingly dull, as did I.

I absolutely love this book, great insight to stories from all around the world. Great for any culture and it also has lots of history stories.

Please fix this damaged digital edition which is currently unreadable. The Eddings are among my favorite authors and this is a butchery of their work.

David Edding's 'Rivan Codex' is not quite the page turner that his books 'The Belgariad', 'The Mallorean'. 'Belgarath the Sorcerer' and 'Polgara the Sorceress' are, but it gives readers of those books some insight into what went into the writing of those. It has information on the fictional cultures of the Alorns and other races of the books and their counterparts in our world, and a lot of other background material that helped him and his wife in the creation of the twelve book series. It is a wonderful companion volume to the other books.

David and Leigh Eddings are two of my favorite authors. I find myself coming back again and again reading the book they right. I am still disappointed that not all of their work has been released on Kindle. I do believe I will just have to be patient. Please Hurray Up and get the older material on Kindle. I find it odd that if you live outside the United States you can purchase the books on Kindle.

Notice the third item in the title is said between coughs.Overall:Interesting to see the background. Seeing his initial story and realizing he started off only a step or two above where I'm at ( the Belgarath story was very cheesy, he also neglects to mention, when he talks about maps, that he did not have a map at that time else he wouldn't have the 'thousand leagues' stuff which he comments on ). In other words, it gave me some perspective.Pros:-Will allow you to weigh yourself as a writer against the beginning David & Leigh Eddings-Gives you some, albeit dated, perspective into the publishing process.-Gently reminds you that David Eddings was a pervert. ( Note: The 'gently' is a lie. )-Gives you perspective between Eddings' level of skill starting on the Belgariad and starting on the Mallorean.-Has good miscellaneous information for budding writers.-Gives you some information on where Eddings got some of his characters...but not much. *SIGH*Cons:-When was this written? Before or after the LotR movies? Eddings' derision of Tolkien, while sort of his right, is sort of uhm...stupid. I doubt anyone is going to make movies out of his books. Tolkien has him soundly beat.-Lots of ego. Sort of what you'd expect from a multi-millionaire old man who isn't going to lose anything.-It isn't really interesting if you're looking solely for insight into his world.-Character creation and personality creation are not covered. Polgara and Belgarath are HUGE personalities and got their own books ( retroactively, I might add, which makes them fairly useless as to seeing what made this happen. "Polgara the Sorceress" is particularly awesome though ), Garion's obvious enough ( blank slate ) but Silk is a character I wanted some "Okay, it was my uncle blargh's tendancy to sneeze every time he lied that gave Silk his nose twitch, but it was my observation of a guy selling a vacuum cleaner to my grandma that gave me his other traits. That guy grew to be a family friend and I got to know him well" from him.-Map creation/ideas are not covered thoroughly.Final judgment:It needs about 250 pages written specifically about characters in his world and their peculiarities. Geography is easy enough to figure out, but knowing what to look for in others to make characters, how to synthesize human traits into new, believable characters, that's a skill that's missing from this. You'll, because of his lack of talking about how he planned his nations ( barring "North: Vikings, South: Romans, Further south: Reptile people, et cetera ), miss out on his geographical decisions. However one can see some symbolism ( intentional or not ) in his placement of his nations. All in all, this book is a book about how he wrote the books. It's useful information and a great gauge for beginning writers to compare themselves to. Being able to say "Hey, he sucked as bad as I do, there's still hope!" should be inspirational to someone. Of course, a reader who says this could suffer from the same self-congratulatory, egotistical syndrome he had when he wrote this.Recommendation:Read the Belgariad and Mallorean in that order. Then read this, then read Polgara the Sorceress and Belgarath the Sorcerer in that order ( the contrast in skill is useful, as is the slow realization that his wife was mostly responsible for Polgara the Sorceress ), then read the Belgariad and Mallorean again. Coming in with all of that new information, you'll get the most you can out of it.Also, aspiring writers, remember to read recently published books. Preferably out of your own genre ( to prevent contamination, or so they say, I ignore this and read whatever I want ). I came into reading this all with my own ideas already formed, realized I was on a good track, and kept on trucking.( Sans one star due to ego )

This was a fun read for anyone who has enjoyed the Belgariad/Mallorian. A brief retelling of a 10 volume masterwork. And a glimpse into the preparation for that epic story.

Enjoyed rereading and reviewing a story that I read way too many years ago. Great intro to the genre for the young & fun read for those of us getting old.

One of my favorite epic fantasy stories. David Eddings has made a world of characters that you might just recognize in people around you. Sure the is magick involved and gods and the struggle between good and evil, but I love the humanness of the characters Mr. Eddings has created. One of my favorite characters is Garion, an honest, earnest, intelligent, yet naive young man that reminds me of myself.

It is an extroidinary thing to to take a peek at how David Eddings came up with his epic series.

I paid my way through grad school taking pictures--thank you Stan Lee and Peter Parker for that idea--and one of the things that helped my photography the most was "How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way" because it had a focus on dynamic action angles. You drop on your knee, spread out on the ground, get that dynamic angle that screams "ACTION!!!!"In this they did that thing where they trace photos, but the photos aren't pro, they are flat, so all the action is flat, and the comic becomes stale. It looks good, certainly more realistic, but there is little dynamic and nothing dramatic about the art and that means it instantly loses the comic feel.A bad artist with good angles would be a better choice than page after page of flatness.

I grew up with Vampi, Uncle Creepy and Cousin Eerie, as well as a host of other similar publications as a kid and teen, but eventually grew out of them - notice I didn't say "grew up", because the propensity and weakness for such things really never goes away, no matter how old we get. It's always there, lurking in the recesses and quagmire of our inner psyche, and bubbles back up to the surface in later years, usually when a 'memory trigger' has been pulled.Decades later, I stumble upon Dark Horse editions of the beautifully bound Creepy and Eerie Archives and, lo and behold, memory triggers fired off, and soon enough I've got a shelf of them, along with several Vampirella Archives from Dynamite. So now I look into this collection of their Master Series and thanks to Amazon's great 'Look Inside' feature, I've now got three of these as well. I'm not 'into' comics anymore, for whatever reason (probably the comic art), but the neorealist artwork grabbed me immediately and, after reading this one, the stories are surprisingly solid and have substance I initially didn't think they would. One of those rare times when it feels good to be wrong, I guess.'Master Series' Volume Three presents us with the three-part 'Nowheresville' saga along with the two-part 'Fear of Mirrors', both exceptional tales with superb artwork. These stories would appeal to any TV fans of 'Supernatural', 'Angel' or 'Buffy', as well as Vampi aficionados, new or old. My favorite is the 'Nowheresville' story, as each part contains a writing style full of depth, twists, sarcasm and contemporary cultural references, along with the sexiest badass good-girl vampire ever committed to paper and pen. You can't go wrong with this edition; the artwork's astonishing and tales are top-tier.So take a trip to 'Nowheresville' - it's someplace special.

Bought this book for my teenage son to read up on Vampires that don't sparkle. He took the book to his room, locked the door and no one has seen or heard from him since. The only real indicator that he is in there still is the tied sock on the door knob.

Nice artwork. Stories are just OK. Not what i remember when i was younger. But the main character is pretty cool.

The weakest of the 4 volumes. But still well worth the cost and time to read. Panel to panel flows well, but a lot of double page formats means some smaller font sometimes, but this is balanced by a more decompressed storytelling style. Comics have been decompressing steadily since the seventies, but Millar, Morrison, Bendis, and Ellis took it to new levels. That means the storytelling is more cinematic with larger panels, no exposition and tighter dialogue. But this approach is well suited to the digital age. As far as this particular entry...good story, but a little light on detail and suffers some awkward genre blending. However, Millar infuses it with his trademark one liners and shock scenes. You can see the beginnings of the tough girl character that he would go on to perfect as Hitgirl in the very popular Kickass. The art is painted in a photo realistic style, but done very well. Still, it's Vampirella, so what? Were you expecting an Eisner award winner? It's a tough character to write and these four masters volumes are the best of the Harris publishing years. This one just offers a little less than the others but is still worth the price of admission.

Okay, let me start off by saying this may be a 4 star book and not a 5 star book like I rated it...but some guy rated this book 2 stars because his book was wet when he got it, and that is not a fair way to review this book and it messes with the rating average so I am just evening the rating out. With all that being said, this is definetely a very fun and entertaining book to read. Some readers may be dissapointed to see that Mark Millar only wrote the first half of this book. The second story arc is written by John Smith and is a pretty solid story, although not as good as the Mark Millar story. The artwork throughout the book is done by Mike Mayhew and is breathtaking at times. The artwork is done with in a realist style and the characters often times look very realistic. This is the first time I have experienced Mayhew's artwork and I defintely enjoyed it. All in all, if you are a Vampirella fan or Mark Millar fan already or if you just enjoy watching hot chicks kick a!@, this book is worth checking out.

Well, apart from some very nice alternate covers at the end, this was total trash. And Vampirella shouldn't be too hard to get right.Volume one (Grant Morrison) was awesome. Volume two (Warren Ellis) was OK.This...

This is a great book. I even ordered another for my aunt that lived in Las Vegas. She loves it also. The recipes are not complex easy to find ingredients. Nothing worse that a recipe that is too extreme and the ingredients are hard to find. Your foodies will like this book

Very nice book. Thought it would have dust jacket, but didn't.

Great book with many wonderful recipes!

I have bought a lot of Jr Service League cookbooks, but this one was not a stand out at all like most others I have purchased from others cities/states.

Fair.

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-6?A charming read-aloud, particularly for St. Patrick's Day. Patrick O'Kelley is a peddler who never tells the truth when a lie will do. When he boasts of his grand blarney-spouting abilities, the King of the Leprechauns decides to teach him a lesson. He brings Patrick to the land of the Little People and presents him with an emerald ring that forces him to speak only what is true. This causes problems not only for Patrick's gift of gab but for his customers who were used to the peddler's flattering ways and walloping yarns. Eventually he is coerced into performing in the famous Blarney Contest and, of course, he can only tell the truth?the account of how the magical Leprechaun king appeared to him in a hall of crystal and gold, arriving on four tiny ponies and gave him the enchanted ring. This outlandish though accurate story is judged the "biggest pack of blarney" ever and the sheepish man actually wins the pot of gold. He has learned his lesson, however, and he continues telling truthful tales of the days he spent with the Leprechauns. Rayyan's wispy pastel watercolor illustrations are peopled with Rackhamesque fairies and realistic characters. There is a fine blend of energy, humor, and magic in the Celtic-bordered pictures. This is a well-crafted tale told with a storyteller's touch; the language flows and the story satisfies.?Beth Tegart, Oneida City Schools, NYCopyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist

Gr. 3^-6. If a famous fibber, who is also an admired boaster and a triumphant exaggerator, can no longer overstate, embellish, or downright lie, then how can he make his living as a salesman, much less win the county's blarney contest? This is the humorous dilemma facing Patrick O'Kelly after he brags that his blarney exceeds that of the king of the leprechauns. Illustrations, with borders imitating the Irish Book of Kells, take readers to an Ireland of fairy tales where even trees have ears. But they also contain a surprising, almost jarring mix of characters--people in traditional medieval costumes, spirit folk from a variety of European mythologies, and characters that have a distinctly contemporary look. This picture book for older readers is still fun, however, and children will be attracted by the premise of the liar's contest as well as the pictures of a fantastic land of leprechauns. It's difficult to beat the King of the Leprechauns at blarney, but champion liar Patrick O'Kelley manages to do it even when he's telling the truth. This should be at the top of the list for St. Patrick's Day stories, but is a delight any time of the year. Children will enjoy poring over the illustrations.

A great Irish tale!

"Patrick O'Kelly was a peddler of scarves and trinkets, with a habit of telling magnificent lies." So begins "The Ring of Truth". "Magnificent" may even be an understatement for him. He is supposed to have kissed the Blarney Stone once, that fabled and mystical rock that gives one the gift of gab, and by the way he carries on, it's believed that he managed to get a bit of that rock stuck in his teeth! He is such a fine artist of Blarney, that he easily boasts that he could out-fib the very king of the Leprechauns himself!!Well, as any good Irish legend will tell you, be careful about what you say about the Fair Folk, for they have great ears for hearing and egos to boot!! It's hardly long before Patrick O'Kelly is swept off to the very land of the Faeries to meet the king of the leprechauns himself!Like any fine Celtic tale, the book is full of twists and turns and play on words, of which the title of the book is just one (I'll not give away the ending for fear of spoiling the fun for readers!). The ending is a fun surprise for readers, as well as for our brave hero, Patrick O'K. Himself! What will stick to readers' ribs most, however, are the illustrations.Illustrated by Omar Rayyan, the book resembles now an illuminated manuscript, now a surrealistic painting. Faeries and other Fair Folk are mischievous creatures, to say the least, and to step into their world, however briefly, is to take a roller coaster ride into the ethereal and strange. Winged sprites flit too and fro, and the King has always about him a smile that is first playful and fun, and upon closer inspection, hinting at some darker purpose. Once Patrick has gone to their fair land, they are all about him, hiding here and there, yet the reader knows that they are invisible to everyone-another example of that mischievous, almost sinister magic they weave. All in all, a tremendous book and perhaps too overlooked in the children's section. Though Irish in nature, it is not about St. Patrick's day, so there is no need to keep it mothballed until then! Bring out this treasure of a story and illustration and read it often!!

This may be my favorite leprechaun story ever! Peddler and blarney teller extraordinaire Patrick O’Kelly's boastful clams of being the best teller of tales has made their way to the King of the Leprechauns; and he is not amused. Everyone knows, or should know, that Leprechauns are the best bards of the land. The king tricks O’Kelly into accepting a gift that will forever change his storytelling ways. The Ring of Truth is a fantastically illustrated and entertaining story, perfect for a read aloud on Saint Patrick’s Day or any day.
