We see her grow from a young girl who spends her happiest days playing and exploring the world around her with her friends and helping her mother with her younger sister. Her closest friends "jumping Fish" (her brother) and "Falcon" are her constant companions as they grow up day by day from children with not a care in the world, to young adults facing the world around them. Her relationship with Falcon changes as they grow older as well.From friendship grows love and they vow to be married one day when the time is right and Falcon has proven himself to be a man and worthy of marriage. To the three of them, life cannot be better, their threesome will stay close with the marriage and they will not have to part. Falcon prepares for his first hunt and with his return, plans to ask for Echo in marriage, a plan that seems perfect to all three of them.All seems happy and carefree for Echo until the day she happens to be in a place where a child falls from a high mesa and she catches it nimbly in her outstretched arms. From that day forward, her life changes in ways that she never dreamed possible....and all because she saved the life of this one child. For the child she saved is a child who belongs to the priest's and their group who live high on the mesa. And with the news of her heroic action a priest asks for her hand in marriage.Echo is crushed but knows that to ask for her hand is a compliment to her family and she cannot even think of refusing. For they have used up most of the natural resources of the area and as they years go by, it is harder and harder for them to prepare for the winters that lie ahead. Sadly they realize the futility of staying and one by one they move on leaving those who are too sick or old to stay and die where they lived. Echo stays behind caring for and burying those who die, as she feels she must do for her tribe. Her husband grows more ill as the days go by until he too passes on and Echo is left to bury her husband by herself. It is Echo's footsteps that are then the last to leave the mesa and all the memories it held for her people.After reading this, I found myself thoughtful, wondering if in fact this could have happened to the people of Chimney rock. I wondered if perhaps they, like the people in this book, slowly realized that though they had a wonderful city built on the mesa, that it no longer met their needs, and beautiful or not, they must move on to survive. I would highly recommend this book for young readers of all ages. It is filled with thoughtful moments, historical references to the lifestyle of Echo and her people and realistic characters as well. It is a book rich with meaning and thought provoking situations. This book is one that would make an excellent addition to any home or classroom library and one that is well worth the price. It is a wonderful way to look at the life of Native Americans and to see all aspects of their life in an easy to read and understandable manner. The reader is at once swept back in time and learns about an America that existed well before 1492. I am sure that this book will find itself in the hands of many middle school students and teachers who want to learn more about this period of history-and read a book that is of the same quality as Scott O'Dell's great novel Island of the Blue Dolphins.

When I was younger I read ISLAND OF THE BLUE DOLPHINS, and it became my favorite book of all time to this day. Never before have I found a novel to compare to that one, until now. I use this book multiple times each ride, it is absolutely indispensible. The book lists trail numbers on most trails, which make getting around easy.

When I purchased a Nevada Road & Recreation Atlas that had missing pages, Benchmark offered to correct the problem immediately. They responsed to my email in less than 24 hours. I've used 3 of their Atlases for different states and find them extremely useful.

I use this atlas for it's great off-road detail to plan and execute ATV trips. This is the BEST atlas I have found for off-road detail in Nevada and it hasn't let me down yet. It must be the best, since others in our ATV Club have it and refer to it often. I never see another atlas on the trail besides this one!

this is a fantiastic book! after reading castanedas work and being profoundly affected by the tools/knowledge he shared with the wrold. i felt there needed to be a kind of dictionary to the terms and techniques of these books...I had no idea there was one till I found this book in hastings, portland oregon. I looked through the book and didn'r buy it..but lter that day I regretted not picking it up..thanks amazon!for anyone who feels that what castaneda shared is useful and indeed powerfull, this book is a very well put together reference guide!

I have always liked stories about time travel but this is completely different than any time travel story I have ever read. For one thing, the story involves a lot of science concerning time travel—a very complicated explanation of how time travel works. I might not be the smartest person in the world, but I usually catch on things pretty fast but this story had me re-reading some parts and having to sit back and think about what I had just read. As I said, this was a complicated story to read. I can fully understand what the author meant in his author notes (after the end of the story) when he said that the plot had him pulling out his hair.Even though this story was complicated it kept me very interested in seeing where it was going to go. I found the main characters, Janna and Blake to be very likeable characters. In this story Janna and Blake could not tell the bad guys from the good guys—and at times you won’t be able to tell either. When you are having to be on the run for your life, and you don’t know who to trust, it makes it even harder to find a safe place to run to. Both of these characters are very intelligent people but Blake is the one with all the experience and the skills on how to survive so Janna picked the very best person she could have turned to for help. And help she needs to stay out of the hands of a very evil person—a person who could hold the key to destroying the world.I won’t tell you the story as I am sure others have probably already done so, and why read the book if you already know everything about it. I will just say that this book will give you an adrenalin rush and the twists and turns will throw you every time you think you have figured everything out. By the end of the book I was sitting on pins and needles. I was only let down by how a relationship turned out—I was hoping for something different.This story can be a stand alone story, no cliffhangers at the end. No steamy sex scenes either even though sex is referred to at times. I got this with my Kindle Unlimited so you will not see purchase verified at the top. I will continue to look for more books by this author.

I read alot of science (fact) and science fiction. The concept behind this sci fi action thriller is unique and the science is sound. I have to give the authors kudos for putting a novel spin on the whole "time travel" subject. I did not have any trouble with the paragraphs spent having the characters explain the theory behind the technology and the machine. The story moved nicely and there were many twists and turns that kept me engaged in the book.But like many reviewers, I found the dialog and the exchanges between the main characters overly simplistic and formulaic. The book sometimes read like it was meant for a teenage audience. In several places towards the end, one of the main characters explains to the chief bad guy how he was tricked and duped. The conversations are wholly unrealistic and unbelievable. The author could/should have used other methods to explain the plot twist.I considered reading another of his books but am still hesitating due to his mediocre writing style. I would give the storyline and plot for Split Second a solid 4 stars, But I have to balance that with 2 stars for the writing. Overall...3 stars.

This author is nothing less than a magician! He turned this die hard Jane Austen fan into a Douglas E. Richards groupie overnight. No one who knows me would ever believe I would go outside my genre, but when several people I really respect started raving about Split Second, I figured I'd give it a chance. I am so glad I did. No matter what your genre, this novel has it all... action, cliff-hanging suspense, smart characters, and incredibly brilliant writing from beginning to end. Richards turned the idea of time travel on its ear and I can't stop thinking about all the implications this book explores. To me that's the mark of a great author, someone who can weave a story that challenges you and makes you think long after you've finished the book. Kudos to Richards for giving this lover of English Literature a new outlook on a whole new world of storytelling. I can't wait to dig into his other books!

I highly recommend all of the books written by this author.The characters in this story are a bit flat, but hey, this is SF. It appears to me as if Douglas Richards' earliest works are quite good and the newest ones are great. I would put him up there with the best SF authors. I started to give this story 4 stars, but that was being too hypercritical, but some of the behaviors of his characters seems a bit cardboard, like early Robert Heinlein. I urge him to continue to hone his writing skills--and keep pumping out more novels. He also tends to keep hidden details that would provide conflict in the story if he brought them to the attention of the reader. I think that is from his thriller perspective.He characterizes his stories as action-adventure or thriller. I call them great SF with a good dose of hard SF providing the foundation. Of course he takes liberties with his extrapolations, but the guts are fundamentally sound. I am blazing through his collection and enjoying every one of his stories.This is good old storytelling. His heroes are the good guys and his antagonists are bad guys. Despite my criticism that the characters are a bit flat, he presents situations that show the nuanced considerations that must be made when evaluating near future developments and potential developments quite well. The characters in his series are much stronger and nuanced.If you are a SF fan you will read this guy sooner or later. He is fast becoming one of the best.

Graham Langridge has been involved with the production of technical blueprints and graphics since 2002.
