Who hasn't thought, on reading a child's book with about 50 words in it, "I could have written this"? For those who would like to try, Ellen E. M. Roberts provides a clear summary of the basics: the characteristics of the picture book; story creation; roles of author and illustrator; and steps in the journey towards publication. And, throughout, Ms. Roberts gives us an appreciative overview of the picture-book genre, describing and showing many of the best examples. There is one drawback. Though this is still an excellent introduction to its subject, it was written almost 30 years ago. The author's picture book overview stops then, of course. The fundamental principles of creating a picture book, however, still hold true. Today's books may look a bit different: more color, more innovations such as pop-ups, and a shift in the age range to include babies and toddlers. But the steps in a book's creation remain the same.Book publishing, however, has changed quite radically. Today, the old-style publishing house, where editors who loved good books nurtured, guided, and inspired authors, has largely been replaced by two extremes: publishing-as-big-business and do-it-yourself publishing. Ms. Roberts is one of the old-style author-mentoring editors, and she shares with us her experience and her natural enthusiasm and good sense. The Children's Picture Book encourages hopeful writers to aim high and helps them do it

Those who can't afford the latest how-to-write-it publications on picture books will do well to purchase a used copy of Ellen Roberts book and absorb the practical information she shares. It's based on twelve years' experience as an editor and publisher. Some methods for producing stories that editors can't resist haven't changed any more than our methods for teaching a child to walk. This author names many cut-and-dried rules, regulations and formulas that have been successful in the past...and gives examples of authors who followed them. But she also is quick to state that there is more than one correct way to write for kids.Beginning writers have to start somewhere, with some direction, and I recommend the first half of Ellen's book as a guide for doing that. The second half deals with getting published and that's where the rules of the game have changed. But there's still worthwhile information to be found in these pages. The end matter has an excellent glossary of production terms which is followed by an extensive bibliography of the author's selection of the best children's picture books published beginning with THE TALE OF PETER RABBIT, 1902.Last week I pulled this book from my personal library to pass on to another writer. Since my next project is a picture book, I decided to reread it first. I am glad I did. Speaking as the author of a series of eight wildlife picture books that have sold 130,000 copies, I highlighted or flagged a number of passages that reminded me of things I never knew or had forgotten. One had to do with not being to move on in a story one is writing. This author says if you "are stuck and can't squeeze another pertinent word out of your head without changing the subject, retype your previous sentence. Do it five times if you have to. Boredom is a great spur to creating new action, introducing a new idea.)Here's another example that I was glad to read. It explains the sales points of What's in the Woods by June Goldsborough, an alphabet book that introduces the animals of the Northeast woods in a story book setting. It's an alphabet book (always in demand.) It contains authentic research to ensure accuracy. Its realistic illustrations are suitable to the nonfiction subject and setting. The plot is a low-key mystery that poses an unanswered question and draws the reader to the end to find the answer.Knowing I was passing the book along to a friend, I read with a highlighter in hand and added to those things I had already marked. When I read things that were outdated, I drew a big X through them...and sometimes added an up-to-date truth. All in all this book helped me move forward with my next creation and I have the satisfaction of helping another writer move forward to a first publication.

I ran across this listing and the one other review offered for it when I was checking to see if by any chance the book was still available. I was delighted to find it was. Yet the first reviewer was correct: the sections on selling your book are now in important ways dated. But back in 1953 when I was trying to enter a world about which I knew nothing and in which I had no friends yet, the "mentoring editor" voice of an experienced, wise, and plain-speaking editor like this work's author was exactly what I needed. I ignored the book's advice on how to write a picture book. (I was confident of my familiarity with the genre -- I must have read over a 1000 picture books aloud to my children by that time -- and sure I had a publishable text.) But I knew I needed to learn how to find this story a publishing home so I could share it with others.I was so naive I had thought it might help if I had a artist friend create illustrations for my tale. Fortunately, this friend went straight to the library, found this very book there, and showed me the passage in it that explained with crystal-clear logic why offering my text and another newcomer's pictures together would be a terrible idea, diminishing chances of acceptance. "You have a great story," she advised me, "and I don't need to be its illustrator. Just go for it!" So I read the whole book, learned how to research publishers and present my work, and sure enough, within a year I had found a publisher for my story, and signed my first book contract.Back then authors writing for adults had to use agents, but writers for children didn't really need one. They had little chance of getting an experienced children's agent until they already had a successful book or two out. (I never used one, yet I continued publishing children's books. Some of them are award winners, and that first one has now had 26 translations.)Yes, now things have changed, and the majority of desirable children's publishers no longer read unsolicited manuscripts, only submissions reaching them through agents. But choosing a good agent is perhaps harder than choosing the right publisher ever was; it's more difficult to make an informed choice. And it's maybe as hard for newcomers in the genre to be accepted by an experienced agent as it was for Dr. Seuss to find a publisher for his first (and still-popular) picture book. You can get some help in finding agents by joining The Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. And if you are just starting, you can worry about many modern author-dilemmas later, once you have a contract offered!Meanwhile, the encouraging and helpful voice of someone who truly understands picture books is a useful and comforting thing to have as close as your bookshelf. This particular title can still be a solid introduction to the basics of the new world you are entering, to the parts that don't change. Newer ones -- focusing on trends, new sorts of books, and new forms of publishing -- may be unlikely to offer so firm a foundation in many unchanging concepts that new writers for kids need to understand.I'm grateful this user-friendly and helpful book was in my local library back when I first entered into the role of being a children's writer. That it is still in print is a measure of its value not just to me decades ago, but to many other new writers through the years since then!

Provided me with lots of great information on how to write and publish a children's book.

All the basic information for an introduction to the Incas is there, which is good, but it is presented in a much jumbled manner. For instance, you get an overview of the Incas (on chapter 1), then the story of the conquest first (on chapter 3), followed by a sketch of a long history of the Andes up to and including the Incas (on the same chapter 3), then a survey of Inca rulers (on chapter 4, overlapping with parts of what's been said already). Some of the specific issues (the Inca highway system, for instance) discussed in the first chapters come back in the rest of the book, sometimes with slight alterations (and no explanation as to the slight differences; compare the number of kilometers recorded on pages 3 and 115), sometimes with word-for-word repetitions of sentences used in the first chapters. You get the sense that the author was at odds to try to assemble and condense a wealth of information on the Incas. On a different note, the book looks bulkier than it should: it really ends on page 200, and the following 69 pages are a (useful) glossary, an annotated bibliography, and an index; with changes to spacing and font size, the number of those pages could have been drastically reduced. Despite the lengthy bibliography at the end, the end-of-chapter bibliographies are not significant at all (with the exception of chapter 10), and long passages refer solely to work from the forties (which is curious for a book presenting "New Perspectives").

One of the best books about the incas

Excellent and updated informationa about the Incas!

Book for my college daughter's study abroad trip to Peru.

This is the first time i have gotten books online for classes and i am just so happy i did. this came in early and an amazing condition! thanks!!

everything great!

Having loved Clendinnen's wonderful book on the Aztecs, I've been looking for equally engaging works on the other cultures in Central and South America. They're rare - there is so much information and so much of it has to be deduced from archaeology that many related works are both dry and cluttered. McEwan takes a very different approach from Clendinnen. It is far more matter-of-fact and certainly more succinct. But the cultures are very different, as is the surviving material. This book is as engaging in its way, providing a methodical overview of another complex culture which nonetheless manages to maintain a distinct and coherent point of view. It helps that the Inca culture here appears as the tip of a chronological iceberg, many of its most distinct features percolating up from far older, far less known cultures. The culture itself is fascinating on multiple levels. Their approach to conquest - integrating local cultures while imposing certain over-arching beliefs and a tribute system - is very reminiscent of the Romans (and far less of the Aztecs, whose approach to domination was very different). The fact that they had something like a monarchical socialist system - run top-down but providing necessities so efficiently that no one used money - is fascinating. The far more limited form of human sacrifice was certainly less sanguinary than the Aztecs, yet eerie, involving as it often did children (preferably "perfect" children) who often traveled the length of the very large empire before being sacrificed. Respect for ancestors exists in a number of cultures, but how many actually keep their ancestors around (as mummies) and maintain them in their ownership (requiring their heirs to start from scratch for conquest and possessions)? On the other hand, the fact that specialized personnel "spoke" for the illustrious dead recalls other rackets, such as the Oracle of Delphi, where priests or other caretakers were in a plum position to profit from a mute presence. How about confession and doing penance? Sound familiar? The sheer expertise of the culture astounds at times, as in their magnificent network of roads - even though they did not have the wheel. And only the elite could use them. Or the idea that the whole city of Cuzco was built to resemble a jaguar. Or the almost Japanese idea of huacas, items filled with spiritual power which could be anything from a river or a mountain to a strangely shaped ear of corn. Or springs, suggesting the beliefs of the Gauls as well. Much of this is in a word very strange, yet presented in a coherent and comprehensible way that is far simpler to follow than the underlying material might lead one to expect. Now if only I could find something like it for the Maya.

Hooray for Gordon McEwan and his fine book, "The Incas!" He tells us about the Inca and their cultural heritage in down-to-earth, easy-to-read language. McEwan covers the subject in 201 concise pages that provide a level of depth and breadth that should appeal to scholars, but contain enough background to orient someone new to the topic.McEwan's extensive glossary is a terrific reference piece, and the index is very complete. Probably what I like the most about "The Incas," however, it its careful, scientific approach; the information is dependably well researched and devoid of speculation.I would recommend "The Inca" to anyone interested in the Inca Empire, arm-chair travellers, and persons planning to travel to any part of the former Inca Empire, including Machu Picchu. The book will double your understanding, and consequently, your enjoyment, of the Inca culture.

I am an art teacher and use this book as a guide for students when we participate in an art contest that requires students to draw a fish that lives in the Gulf of Mexico. I like that the fish are so beautifully colored and detailed so my students can compare their fish to those of other students and can tell their apart. The book also includes information about every fish - size, food value, etc.I would recommend this book highly to anyone needing information about fish that live in the Gulf of Mexico.

I was looking for a book that displayed pictures of fish I like to fish for. When I received it I was surprised to find habitat, life & feeding information. It is too nice of a book to take on the boat with me. I would be devastated if it were to get ruined. If you want to take it with you buy a second book or make a copy the species of fish you want to fish for.

If you fish the Gulf of Mexico, you'll love this book. The only reason I didn't give it a fifth star is because I thought the art, however awesome it is, was a tad inaccurate on several species but not enough to mislead identification.

great.....

Excellent identification of fish species! Many fish in the same group, snapper for instance, have a similar appearance. This book is a great resource for determining just what it is you caught! I keep it in a ziplock bag aboard my boat for easy reference!

This book is very detailed, and quite interesting to read. I would consider it a must have for most anglers, as I've been fishing on the gulf for many years and still catch a fish from time to time that I'm not quite sure what it is. This book will definitely help you know what you've caught and is laid out in an easy to understand format.

Great book! Purchased as a gift for someone. They loved it! It has beautiful large images of the fish and is a high quality, hard cover book. Perfect to display on a coffee table, desk, etc.

This is a very well thought out book that has been immesurable for me in determining fish species in the Gulf. It is easy to read, easy to reference and presents clear, accurate pictures of Gulf fish, especially, for someone like me who is just now getting addicted to fishing.
