Engaging Ideas: The Professor's Guide to Integrating Writing, Critical Thinking, and Active Learning in the Classroom, 2nd Edition

From the Back Cover

The need for faculty to teach writing and thinking in every course across the curriculum has never been more crucial. Fortunately, there is a book that can guide your efforts and contribute to your and your students' success.—From the Foreword by Maryellen Weimer Teaching for critical thinking, especially in a way that fosters student engagement and active learning, is even more important today than when the first edition of this best-selling classic was published. In this thoroughly revised and updated edition, John Bean offers a practical guide for designing writing and critical thinking activities and incorporating them into courses across all disciplines in ways that stimulate inquiry, exploration, discussion, and debate. In this second edition, Bean integrates recent pedagogical research, brings rhetorical theory to bear on writing in the disciplines, addresses quantitative and scientific literacy, advocates a new approach to the research paper, includes activities for online and blended learning environments, and offers new ideas for transformative assessment of student learning. Praise for the Second Edition "The first edition of Engaging Ideas quickly became the 'faculty development bible'; believe it or not, this new edition is even better. Refreshed by current research, new practical examples, and theoretically sound pedagogical principles, this is a book for teachers of all subjects, regardless of level or institution. Faculty who dip into these engaging ideas will find dozens of ways to promote their students' success as thinkers and writers—and have fun doing so."—Carol Rutz, director of the Writing Program, Carleton College "The book is both conceptually rich and wonderfully practical. Bean gives straightforward and concise advice for thinking through what writing means for students in any field of study, and instructors will continue to find this a primary guide to serious thinking about learning and teaching."—Dan Bernstein, director, Center for Teaching Excellence, University of Kansas

I've been teaching writing in college and graduate school for about 15 years, including two years in a writing department. I know that my University's teaching center recommends this book, so I decided to take a look at it. Bean helped me step back and take a fresh look at how to connect my writing assignments with the thinking that I want my students to do. After reading this book, I have been experimenting this semester with having the students do more thinking exercises before they actually write their papers. In emphasizing the value of thinking before writing, I have shared with several of my students the section in chapter 2 about the French concept of brouillon ("something deliberately scrambled, something placed in disorder, something that must be wrestled into form").This thought-provoking book should prompt all professors to review their methods for provoking thought....

I’ve read at least 15 highly regarded books on college teaching. This one is significantly better than all the rest of them. Each chapter helped me understand why certain things are difficult for students and offered effective solutions that have been fairly easy to implement. Here are a few things I’ve learned from this book that have made a very meaningful difference in my teaching:* why students don’t do the reading and how to help them learn to read difficult texts* why frequent, short, informal writing helps students learn better and specific ideas for implementing it with little to no effort on my part* why 2 or 3 short papers, staggered throughout the semester, is WAY better than a longer paper due at the end of the semester* Why you should give students the opportunity to revise their paper (to address your written feedback) for a higher grade* how to give written feedback on student papers that students will actually read and learn from.As you might have guessed, most of this involves writing. I learned from this book two really valuable things about teaching with writing. First, adding written assignments (even just short, informal ones) to your arsenal of teaching pedagogies is a very effective way to help them learn content.Second, a year of freshman comp is simply not enough writing instruction for most students, and learning how to write well in college is extremely important. Therefore, it is really every professor’s responsibility to help students improve their writing skills. This book shows us why and how to do that, without adding much to our already too high workload. Are you a department chair? Buy a copy for each faculty member in your department. Have a monthly lunch at which you discuss 2 chapters from this book. This will improve the quality of teaching in your department.

Using the ideas in this book transformed my classroom. I teach adults in a vocational program. Most have little time for homework, but I started assigning weekly written assignments following the suggestions. Bingo! Students became more active in class and were prepared for discussions. While they didn't enjoy the papers, they all felt the papers were extremely valuable in their learning. I continue to refer to this book when planning a class or assignment. It's not a one-time read although you could easily read it straight through.

This is the best single book out there on teaching writing and critical thinking -- and the second edition is a significant revision, expansion, and updating of the first, without losing the balance of clearly articulated principles and multiple practical examples of the first edition. If you love your current first edition, you should at least borrow a copy of the second from your library or teaching center to see the expanded sections on teaching students to write in multiple genres, supporting undergraduate researchers, and anchoring writing in particular disciplinary contexts. This is not a chintzy "I updated a few references and added some new stories" second edition: every chapter is rewritten to better prepare teachers for writing and thinking instruction in classes across the disciplines.I use this book as a cornerstone of my composition pedagogy course, recommend it to all my colleagues, and always find something useful when I re-read it myself.

I was sceptical but had to read this for a workshop. The book converted me completely. Since then I've bought it for colleagues, gone back to it many times, and used it to change the way I teach--especially the way I teach writing. Best of all, it's evidence-based but flexible; it gives more than one side of an issue. (E.g., it gives the arguments and evidence both for and against essay exams.) It gives lots of examples and suggests many ways of doing things (e.g., LOTS of kinds of rubrics, and the strengths and weaknesses of each). I keep going back to this book, though I wish I had more time to use it.

Are you an instructor? If you answered "yes" to that question, then you must buy this book. Even if your expertise is not in composition or English, this will help you craft new assignments or activities to help your students do some critical thinking.

Dr. Bean has some terrific ideas for meaningful teaching. This book is worth every penny. Ideas about how to help students learn to think critically through writing and reading are enriching for every educator.

Very easy to read and apply ideas. I was hoping more in the beginning on what critical thinking entails (i.e. Facets of rhetorical problem solving), but this is still a good book to read before implementing any composition course pedagogy.

The sections I've read of the book so far are well written and easy to follow, and typically have good examples. But there were a couple areas I was dissapointed in: 1: The authors should have given a bit more advice on which classes are now preferred, which classes programmers really use, etc. Examples: In the Collections Framework section, I would have appreciated more advice about how to decide which is the best collection class to use, some guidelines or something; Java 2 has LOTS of collection implementations to choose from. The same is true for the java.io section; which file/io routines to programmers really use. How important is buffered IO in the real world? Is it worth the extra steps to code, etc. 2: The examples were generally good, though there are some changes. First of all, examples were repeated frequently with a few lines changed. It would be nice to see those specific new lines highlighted in some way. Also, in some cases, I would have liked an additional, new example vs. just repeating and modifying the previous example. But the examples weren't bad, certainly on a par with other books. I still would recommend the book, but not as a sole reference or tutorial.

I found this book very useful for learning Java (I am using it while I also read "Thinking in Java"). I am a beginning programmer, knowing a little html and vbscript so I don't have a background of C++ or C under my belt. This book takes you step by step and explains concepts that you build on to understand object oriented programming, classes, methods and so on. If you know C++, you won't have a problem at all. The examples are perfect if you are patient enough to type them in. I didn't find the downloadable .lst code very helpful, but the examples are correct in this book.

"Complete Reference" is definitely a perfect name for this book. It is complete and I find myself using this book often. It is also well written and easy to follow.

This book was excellent. I received it as expected and in good condition

When I needed to learn the Java programming language very quickly for work, I read many reviews and narrowed down my search to handful of few books. I looked at copies of my final possible choices in a local bookstore and finally purchased Herbert Schildt's "Java 2: A Beginner's Guide, Second Edition" and have absolutely no regrets. Along with this book, I realized that I would also need a more comprehensive reference book detailing the multitude of Java classes designed for many purposes. To this end, I chose Herbert Schildt's "Java 2: The Complete Reference, Fifth Edition" not only for its extensive library, but also because of Herbert Schildt's wonderful writing that is easy to read and understand quickly.Herbert Schildt subdivided "Java 2: The Complete Reference, Fifth Edition" into four parts: tutorial, library, software development and applications. Part I (the first 346 pages) is a Java tutorial, organized similarly to Herbert Schildt's other book that I purchased, "Java 2: A Beginner's Guide, Second Edition". However, the tutorial in this book is more condensed than in the guide, which has over 500 pages. Some readers may find the condensed approach in this book sufficient to learn the language, but if you want more comprehensive tutorial explanations, the guide is good companion.Part II (the next 539 pages) is an extensive library detailing most of Java's built-in classes dealing with everything from string handling, collections, utility classes, console I/O, file I/O, networking, applets, event handling (mouse movements, button use, and other interactive GUI objects), the AWT (Abstract Window Toolkit), images and other I/O types including Regular Expressions. Part III (the next 128 pages) provides some information about Java Beans, Swing, Servlets and a helpful guide for migrating from C++ to Java. Part IV (the next 123 pages) shows Java in action with four example applications.Overall, I rate Herbert Schildt's "Java 2: The Complete Reference, Fifth Edition" with 5 out of 5 stars. It has become a constant companion as I learn and work with Java.

I have always enjoyed Osborne's "Complete Reference" series, and this book is no exception. Designed as both a learning aid and a reference book, I found that material was both easy to lookup and the text was engaging enough to read through. The book starts out with an overview of Java, including a discussion of OOP. If you're an experienced OO Programmer, you'll probably be a bit bored. Really the first 6 chapters cover all the basics of creating a Java program (including data types, operators, classes, and control statements). After this initial discussion, the book gets a bit more complicated by diving into inheritance, threads, and I/O.What I really enjoyed about this book is the rest of it: after this discussion on Java language principles, the rest of the book is a how-to on the various Java libraries. For example, in the chapter on the java.util library, there is a section on the HashSet class. There is a description of the class (including various overloaded constructors) and a good example of how to use it. Think O'Reilly's Java In A Nutshell but with a lot more instruction and examples.Another thing I really enjoyed about the reference section of this book, is that "gotchas" are clearly outlined. Where there are tricky little things you wouldn't think about, or differences in how Java behaves depending on what your might expect, this book explains these issues. In any case, the reference section covers the java.lang, java.util, java.io libraries in addition to providing detailed discussion of using networking and AWT libraries.

I absolutely loved this wonderful feel-good romance by Kelli McCracken. This is the first romance I’ve read from this talented author, but IT WILL NOT BE the last! As soon as I post this STRONG positive recommendation, I will be looking for any other titles she has written. Author McCracken’s writing style is easy to read, the plot was compelling, and the characterization was exquisite. The reader is never told how to view a character, we learn about personalities, abilities, and quirks as we read. I absolutely love it when a character’s personality is revealed by his/her actions and reactions to the events and activities of the plot. And the plot for “What the Heart Wants” was incredible – so, read the blurb and get an idea of the story and trust me when I say, “This book is AMAZING!” McCracken was able to tap into my every emotion as she told the tale of Heaven and her dream man Dylan. I suspect the story will do the same for anyone who likes a great feel-good ROMANCE! The way the perspective of each of the main characters changed and gave the reader the opportunity to understand each one’s thoughts and feelings as the events unfolded was illuminating. Add to that the glimpse a reader gets of the backside of the music industry and “What the Heart Wants” falls into the category of MUST READ ROMANCE! I was given a late ARC to prepare this honest voluntary review; however, I plan to purchase a copy of my own and perhaps the full series. Get your copy today! Happy pages. 😉

I really, really enjoyed this ridiculously romantic mystical romance and I am looking forward to reading the other books in this series. Save for a few of those inevitable typos, this book was well-written. Chock full of emotion, lovable (and not so lovable) characters and beautifully described scenery that was a delight to the senses, the author obviously has a real talent for pulling the reader right into the story. I also loved that this story was told, not only from the perspective of the two main characters, but from that of some of the secondary characters as well.Heaven Lewis, along with her two sisters, Hope and Faith is visiting her best friend Chelsea in Los Angeles. The triplets are unaware that they've really been invited there for Chelsea's wedding! The bride-to-be had wanted to keep everything hush-hush as she's about to marry a celebrity and she doesn't want the paparazzi to get wind of the pending nuptials.Heaven is delighted for her friend, but despairs of ever finding a love of her own. To say that her one and only romantic relationship had ended badly would be a gross understatement. It doesn't help that she is becoming increasingly obsessed with the mysterious stranger that stars in her dreams every night. Fat chance of ever finding true love when she is falling for a figment of her imagination!Dylan McBride is every bit as obsessed with the dark-haired beauty that has been starring in his own dreams, but unlike Heaven, he recognizes her right away when they meet at the church for Chelsea's and Kyle's wedding rehearsal. How can she be real and how is it possible that he's been dreaming about her for months when he's positive that they've never met before? Thus their story begins as Dylan tries to unravel the mystery of their strange connection while he gets to know the flesh and blood woman that fate has finally saw fit to put in his path.Of course that's not the whole story and there are forces working against them willing to manipulate the two in order to further there own personal agendas.Heaven has no desire to date a celebrity no matter how attractive he is or how powerfully she is drawn to him and she definitely has no interest in any of Kyle's other friends that have made advances toward her. Add in the fact that Dylan's best friend is drawn to Heaven as well, that they each have complex relationships with their family and friends and that they each have scars from the past that they've yet to overcome and we have a full and satisfying romantic read. Highly recommended!

Heaven Lewis and Dylan McBride were born on the same day, in the same hospital, 21 years ago. They have never met, but have invaded each other’s dreams since childhood. They wish they could find each other, but are not sure if they’re real. At their best friends’ wedding, the meeting between them finally takes place, but their reactions are unexpected. Dylan feels Heaven is the girl from his dreams, but Heaven doesn’t know he’s the boy she’s been dreaming about. Both Heaven and Dylan are strong, loveable characters with beautiful hearts and souls. The story behind their connection is beautiful. It took a while for them to get romantically involved. There were many twists and miscommunication, but once they did, it was magic. The book is very well written, with an interesting concept of souls being connected since birth. This book is full of feel good love and romance. This is not a story about an Alpha male, fighting for a woman and being possessive, but it gives us a soul searing love between a man and a woman who would do anything for each other. Many characters are involved in the story, and although the purpose of some is not yet clear, they are all important.I really enjoyed this book and can’t wait to read what’s next for Heaven and Dylan.

Loved the idea of two people being destined for one another and appreciated how the author tied these two lives together from the start. Dylan has dreamed of a woman his entire life and finds it impossible to meet anyone that compares to her in real life. Little does he know, Heaven has shared the same dreams for as long as she can remember.Fate brings them together for a mutual friend's wedding and the sparks fly between Dylan and Heaven. His hesitancy to admit to her that he has been dreaming of her for a lifetime, creates an eventual rift they must overcome. There are also outside influences that force the soulmates apart. Is their connection to each other strong enough to overcome the obstacles put in their way? Looking forward to finding out more about Dylan and Heaven's story in Book 2.
