Anyone interested in genealogy or the history of the Midwest should find Pioneer Women very worthwhile reading. As a native Kansan of advanced age, I could relate to many of the stories and chapters. I could imagine my Mother, Father or Grandparents telling each event. I would think that living in Kansas would be a bonus for enjoyment from reading this book but I sincerely believe segments would appeal to everyone and the Book in full would be a very wise use of time and excellent entertainment.

I was amazed to read about the hardships these women faced and how determined they were to overcome and succeed. It was inspiring.

.This is a great book that everyone should read.. If you think you have it hard today read this and thank God how blessed you are to live in this day and time. Our pioneers had a rough life and they were tough tough people. Makes you wonder how we here in the United States today would do living the lifestyle that our pioneer ancestors did. This is a five star read.

This book was very interesting. It told in great detail what life was like in Kansas in the late 19th century. It made me realize that we always think things are bad now. This book will make you appreciate being here now instead of back then.

I read this book years ago and wanted a copy to reread again. It is the only book I have laughed and cried through. The accounts of the pioneer women gives us a tiny idea of the life of those prairie women. I cannot begin to comprehend the hardships they faced, how they endured and the profound loneliness they experienced. It is a book for anyone who is interested in history of women of the prairie. I am glad I found it so I can have a copy again.

History lovers will really enjoy this book. It is filled with interesting information and first-hand accounts of women who helped settle the Kansas Frontier. Most of us heard about the hardships people faced while traveling west in the 1800s, but reading about those hardships from the women who experienced them is especially enlightening.

Very interesting history from a woman's life. My husband also has enjoyed reading this.

Love the stories in this book! I’d recommend it!

The Constitutional Convention: A Narrative History from the Notes of James Madison (Modern Library Classics)

From Publishers Weekly

In 1787, the fledgling American nation was in the throes of a serious economic depression, at least partly because the Articles of Confederation were too weak to make a stable republic. At the initiative of 36-year-old Virginian James Madison, delegates convened in Philadelphia that year to draft the much stronger U.S. Constitution. This book tells the convention's turbulent story in Madison's own words, drawn from the notes he took at the scene and giving us a daily blow-by-blow. Along the way, modern readers begin to understand just how much of the government's role was up for grabs. Should the executive be a single person, or was that too much like a monarchy? Would all members of Congress be elected by the people—a potentially dangerous and anarchic proposition—or would senators be appointed by the state legislatures? How would slaves be counted for government representation? Larson (a professor of history and law at the University of Georgia) and Winship (a professor of English at the University of Texas–Austin) steer readers through the fierce debates with helpful explanations and editorial asides, as well as a cogent epilogue, making this primary source far more than a tidy civics lesson. From Booklist

James Madison's record of the Constitutional Convention of 1787 has circulated since 1840 in various forms; this volume claims to be the "first abridged and annotated" edition. Addressing modern readers likely to become disoriented in the parliamentary thicket of the unexpurgated version, Larson and Winship distill the most salient differences that emerged in the convention--the representation of states in the national legislature, the form of the executive branch, and the status of slavery. The text thereby linked becomes more dramatic than the delegates' dry discussion of enumerated powers, as when at a contentious moment Benjamin Franklin unsuccessfully moved that the convention hire a minister to offer prayers. Delegates preferred nondivine assistance in their arguments, citing the history of republics, liberty's relation to human nature, or various parochial interests. Bringing forth the flow of deliberations around particular words, which regularly ignited strenuous debate, on slavery in particular, the editors instill both an understanding for the Constitution's underlying compromises and an appreciation for what a vital document Madison's record is. James Madison's notes from the constitutional convention provide insights into the issues of th day. Much of the discussion involved slavery, which almost prevented th creation of a federal government. Whether slaves were people or property was not resolved. Also interesting was the skeptical view of the people's ability to choose good leaders or in stead be sways by demagogy.

Madison's notes on the Constitutional Convention; so if you are interested in the founding, American history, Constitutional Law, or American Legal/ Political Theory this is a must

Great read ... Knowing what went on, the compromises, the disagreements, small states vs large states, slavery states vs non-slave states, the personalities and the discouraging weather in Philadelphia. Very illuminating.

Great read 10/10 would recommend for anyone to have that is a history fan or if you are looking for a nice gift for someone you know that is into history.

A wonderful correction for all the nonsense written today about constitution.

I read this book from beginning to end. I never really understood what it took for the founding fathers to write the U.S. Constitution, or what they wanted it to mean, until I read this book. It should be required reading in all U.S. high school history and social studies classes.

Great read. It was history in the making. The insight of the CC by Madison was fascinating.

I needed the book for school. I think it's important to read this book, along with the Federalist and Anti Federalist Papers to get a good understanding of why our Constitution is the way it is! I love our Constitution and this book is a great tool towards understanding it!
