Vedic wisdom is the basis of the Hindu religion, & it's basic principles are scattered about in many different places. This book was a bit of a dry read for me, it is written in an academic sort of way that while it addressed the topics thoroughly for study, it doesn't make them 'come alive' in a way that perhaps reading a direct translation might. But this is good for comparative studies perhaps

I've spent decades searching out truths about existence which made sense, gradually gravitating toward Hinduism. The ancient Vedas contained details about the physical nature of reality (corresponding to quarks and string theory etc) which only recently have started to be confirmed by modern science, due to the increasing power and sophistication of microscopes and telescopes. They were written thousands of years ago, allegedly revealed by "higher masters."This incredibly informative and concise book explains the deepest, most profound beliefs in clear simple terms. Beautifully written, there is nothing excessive about the prose. Every page contains important information explaining everything you need to know about God and life and the nature of the universe.Hinduism is the only major monotheistic religion on earth which acknowledges there is some truth in the others, and it is (to my mind) clearly the most objective and intelligent.Forget all the "New Age" books and read this instead. It is the REAL DEAL.

This book is good if you want to look into the veda's to see the fuss to get you prepared to look into the real veda's sure to come..I suggest this book to anyone who needs a intro

I am disappointed. The reviews were rich but the book itself falls short. I would not recommend this to anyone who would liketo be introduced to Vedas even at beginner level.

Awesome so enjoying this read!!

I have studied many philosophical texts, and have also studied in depth many holy scriptures - and therefore, I can say with at least some authority, this book is just hot air without much to say. I am giving it two stars generously, on the possibility that it is just way above my head, but really after at least a week of trying to make sense of even the first part of the book and coming up with contradictory nonsense, I gave up. I would just read the Vedas directly, especially the Upanishads.

enlightening !!!Wonderful read...

very nice book

First of all, the publication date listed for this item is not correct. It states that it will be out on February 1, 2011, but Amazon sent the item to me a few days ago and it is in my hands. It's 2011, and Franklin begins the celebration of his 25th anniversary with this wonderful book - a 25th anniversary edition of his very first adventure. This includes the complete, original "Franklin in the Dark." In the story, Franklin finds himself with a big problem. Turtles sleep in their shells, but it's dark in there, and Franklin is afraid of the dark. He drags his shell behind him and goes on a journey, looking for someone to help him with his problem. Though he doesn't find anyone who has a problem just like his, his adventure does give him an idea for how to overcome his fear. This 25th anniversary edition has so much more than the original story however. Included at the very beginning is Paulette Bourgeois's original manuscript - "The Turtle They Called Chicken," giving fans a rare look into the early development of the series. There is also original storyboard artwork and sketches, as well as letters from both Paulette Bourgeois and Brenda Clark. The pages at the back of the book contains even more excellent supplementary material. Readers are given a look at the development of the entire series - from the books to the television show, with the promise of an upcoming CGI series in 2011. There are also pictures of many different types of "Franklin" merchandise, some of which I didn't even know existed. There is also a wonderful look at the Franklin Children's Garden in Canada and a section on international editions of "Franklin."If you or your children are fans of this intrepid young turtle, this 25th anniversary edition of the original is a can't miss.

A fun Halloween classic in my house. My nine year-old girl still enjoys when I read this book to her. My wife and I both teach at the elementary level so any opportunity to read fun stories such as these that teach kids about the nuances of friendship is dear to our hearts! The illustrations are fun and vividly capture the spirit of the Halloween season! This was the Kindle version of the book and I was concerned it would be diminished, but it wasn't. A wonderful surprise!

This has been a good book for my 3 (almost 4) year old daughter. She has been afraid to sleep by herself in her room. It's a super sweet story. We skip the word "monsters" when the book talks about what might be in Franklin's shell. I don't want to plant any ideas in her head! Besides that, super cute book!

My little 7 month old got a kick out of this for her first Halloween. She loves the characters and it's not too wordy that she gets bored.

My daughters and myself LOVE these books. My goal is to purchase all of them over time

Important message about finding your own answers. :)

My 4 year old daughter LOVES the Franklin books. The tv episode is also very similar to the book.

This was a gift for my soon to be 2-year old grandson. He LOVES turtles and he LOVES Franklin. He started reading with his mom and loved this book

Sex, drugs and rock and roll?? Lol. No. Not even close. No sex, no drugs, and if you consider her crush on Robert plant, well I guess there is your rock and roll. Oh, and like Many of us in the 80's, she hung out on sunset strip. We all saw the band's she saw, we all saw the flyer wars, so yeah, nothing new there. So. What I got from this book. Her mom slept with any famous person that offered, drank to much, and was mean to her. Dad played in the ventures. Not exactly a rock star, but hey, whatever. She loves horses. WAY to much detail on horses. Title is very misleading, as are the back cover reviews. I lost interest as she dragged into the 90's, and could honestly care less how the book ends. That's a first. I generally finish every book I've ever picked up. This one? Right in the trash. 449 pages of drivel. The fact that she is considered an author is mind blowing. My life in the 80s? Now that was sex, drugs and rock and roll. Title of this book could have been "my dad was semi famous, my mom was a whore, and I love horses" if you were into the LA scene in the 80's, read sunset strip diaries and confetti covered quicksand. Those books are all sex, drugs and rock and roll!! This book is way to long. 200 pages could have covered it all. Boooo.

Wow! What a great read! This fascinating memoir/expose'/ history of Los Angeles and Hollywood, written by one of its denizens who grew up drenched in the lure and lore of rock and roll, Hollywood stardom and movie mania is a real page-turner. Staci, the daughter of a rock legend and a pinup girl who matured into a writer, gives us an amazing read backstage and behind the scenes of her own life and the wild side of the entertainment industry. The memoir aspect of this multi-level book is moving. The celebrity gossip is eye-opening, and the history is a love letter to Los Angeles and Hollywood. No one could write this but Staci. It's written from her unique perspective growing up behind the scenes in the music and entertainment industries. I loved every page.

Thoroughly enjoyed Stacy Payne Wilson's memories of growing up in L.A.Being a San Francisco girl myself, i enjoyed her tales of the southern part of the state i didn't know. The stories of people she got to meet, either because of her famous father and semi famous mother or of her own initiative through jobs and her writing, are told with easy candour and lively wit. Every much enjoyed

Fabulous and fun to read. Loved all the insight in a special life.

slow at times.

Staci Layne Wilson's So L.A. takes you back in time and relives pop culture from the inside out. Her sense of humor is fun and engaging. Her life and career have led her to an unending list of interesting people from animals and authors to movies and music. Ms. Wilson's life to date has been utterly fascinating!

Up to a point. I enjoyed the read till near the end and just lost interest. Author bounced around quite a bit in beginning. Being from the neighborhood helped keep my interest but couldn't hold me to end of the book.

I just can't finish this book, no matter how hard I try. The lack of depth and over-the-top name-dropping certainly fits as being "So L.A." but there's no substance. Rather than any type of memoir, it reads more like a collection of party stories that were overheard, with notes jotted down on a cocktail napkin; the problem being all you get are the notes and not the complete story. Reminds me of a very young teen trying to write in an adult manner but failing miserably. Sorry, but I have no desire to read anything further from this author.

Five stars for everything . . . EXCEPT the narrator. He gets a zero . . . & there's so much of him. As another reviewer noted, these books are less about Inspector Hobbes & more, much more, about Andy. And I really, really regret that, as the rest of Inspector Hobbes is very good to excellent, with good writing, intriguing characters, quite a lot of humor, imaginative (though not very frequent) action scenes & acceptable mysteries. So sad.Inspector Hobbes & his housekeeper are wonderful characters & I loved everything about these books . . . except the narrator, Andy. As a Watson to Hobbes' Holmes he can be forgiven his cluelessness & as an Arthur Dent (who I quite sympathize with) to Hobbes' Ford Prefect, he can be forgiven his 'nervous nature'. But he is also a slacker, an ingrate & a freeloader. And he's "accident prone" mostly because he's careless, lazy & takes no responsibility for himself. He could contribute quite a bit to the household in which he finds himself, but even when he makes the rare attempt, it is usually abortive thru lack of preparation or inattention. I almost gave up on this book, but figuring that he seemed such a young man he might improve with exposure to the upstanding & compassionate Hobbes, I stuck it out to the end. And he did rise to the occasion when absolutely necessary. But I was mightily shocked when I found that he is supposed to be 37 years old! The scattering of references to his smothering mother, verbally abusive father & one single line about "what happened to [his] sister" (presumably tragic) weren't sufficient, for me, to counterbalance his unlikeability. Perhaps if more of his background had been interspersed in the beginning . . .With the indications towards the end of book 1 that Andy could improve, I was hopeful when I began book 2. But though "mostly harmless" he continues to be pretty thoroughly selfish & whining. And altho thots of better behavior occasionally cross his mind, he rarely acts on even the smallest, like thanking the housekeeper. I became rather adept at skimming the pages of his "oh pity me & when's my supper going to be". But it's still irritating enough that I will not be continuing the series.

I don’t remember how I happened on Wilkie Martin’s Inspector Hobbes series but I noticed “Inspector Hobbes and the Blood” on my kindle and it turned out to be exactly the right book at the right time. A light, urban fantasy was exactly what I needed. There are so many variations of “urban fantasy” it is difficult to know what to expect. I would call this “Rivers of London” meets Scott Meyer :) Like “Rivers”, this focuses on police work/mystery with an, um, “unusual” detective and a very human side kick in world populated by fantastic creatures. But it also has the silly humor, pratfalls of Meyer’s “The Authorities”. As you might expect, the mystery isn’t that mysterious- the fun is in the journey.Although I’m a big fan of Aaronovitch and Meyer, I’m a little surprised that I found this so addictive because the sidekick narrator, Alan, really isn’t very likeable. In addition to seeming more cursed than merely accident prone, he is often petty, cowardly, and mean spirited. But he does show an awareness of his failings. (I probably would have been more comfortable if he were a twenty year old rather than 37.) But addictive it is. I’ve already read the second in the series and started the third. Spoiler Alert- Alan improves with each book :)

This is a fun mystery. One is never sure how much is supernatural till close to the end. That makes it sound like a serious, frightening book, but it's actually very light-hearted, with a lot of humor. Much of the humor seems to just miss the mark, (which, judging from other reviews, may just be my taste. )Somewhat slow moving at first, and, as others have remarked, with the narrator being rather obnoxious (though he gets better as the book proceeds), it had me wondering if one of the villains was supernatural up until the end. The mystery itself is somewhat rambling, the author concentrating more upon the characters.I'd say this is a fun read, though slow in places. I'm going to buy the next one, because I think this series has a lot of potential, and with a slight bit of polishing, some of the jokes could be laugh out loud on the subway funny. My other reason for buying the book (and planning to go through the series) is that there are hints of an interesting backstory for some of the main characters, and I'm curious enough to keep reading to find out their true history. For a first novel (as far as I know, at least the first of a series), it held my attention, though I had to push through a few spots, and deal with my annoyance at the narrator. It certainly did make me want to buy the next book in the series.I can't really think of what to compare it to. It's sort of an urban fantasy combined with a British police procedural.

This particular series is like Port wine - it's an acquired taste. When I bought this first book in the series, I only managed to get through the first score or two of pages. I so disliked the chief character Andy Caplet that I almost stopped. Perhaps it's the English thing - - they like milk toast protagonists who come through in a pinch. I really disliked the guy...and still do (four books in); however, the rest of the characters are amazing and wonderful, from Inspector Hobbes (apparently a were of some sort) to Mrs. Goodfellow, to the rest of the cast. It's really difficult, however, to get over one's complete contempt for the principle character and so the four stars instead of five. E-gads, Mr. Martin, at least give Andy a pretend spine at some point in the series. Yes, I bough them all. They're addicting. They're like Pralines and Cream ice cream or Blanton's bourbon. Neither is good for you, but you enjoy yourself so much it doesn't really matter. In this first book we find out that vampires aren't real - - they just think they are.
