It has been years since Jennie Buchanan walked out of Ethan Justice's life taking his heart with her. Jennie is getting ready to open a showing of her photographs to raise money for her charity Photos of Hope. Someone is determined that she not open her show and has threatened to kill Jennie. Ethan Justice and his siblings have been hired to protect Jennie.Having spent years trying to forget her, Ethan's family is worried that he will once again have his heart ripped out and they are not going to let that happen again. From the beginning Jennie tries to keep the walls up around her heart but is it time to let her guard down and allow people to care for her?As the threats on Jennie's life increase Ethan realizes that he is willing to do whatever it takes to protect her and that his heart never stopped caring for her. Will his love and skill be enough to keep Jennie safe and to show her what Christ's forgiveness is all about? This is the first in the Justice Agency books and as usual it seems for me I have read the series backwards! I read the 3rd one first, then read the 4th book and now have read this one. Thankfully each story can stand alone although having read the last two books I did know who Ethan would end up with. I really liked this story in that it has a lot of suspense, but it also has a great message of God's forgiveness along with our need to also forgive ourselves. The story was well developed and fast-paced and I never found myself ready to put the book up for the night. I read this during vacation so unfortunately I did have to put it up at times but was eager to pick it back up and get immersed in the story once more. In fact my husband had to do without my company for several miles of our drive today so I could finish! I'm looking forward to reading book 2 Dead Wrong soon.

This is the first book of Susan Sleeman's I have read, and am very pleased with it.Reading the description of the Justice Angency series reminded me of Dee Henderson's O'malley's (which I loved.) I am impressed with Ms. Sleeman's writing style and the premise of the book. Double Exposure is a well-written inspired suspense romance. It was a fast read, because the book was hard to put down. The suspense was riveting.Ms. Sleeman weaves God's lessons to be learned by Ethan and Jennie perfectly throughout the book. Some of them are: pride, forgiving ourselves as God as already forgiven us, letting the past go, seeing how God can use bad things in our lives to later help others, trust, and realizing God loves us no matter our pasts. Ethan and Jennie are likable and realistic. I enjoyed the introduction to the other Justice siblings. I am sure they will have interesting stories. Ordering Kat's story now! Happy Reading!

Susan Sleeman is one of my favorite authors'. I have read Double Exposure, Dead Wrong, and now High-Stakes Inheritance. All 3 books were so good! The action heats up quickly in this book, and I couldn't put this book down. Jennie is a photographer, and by mistake took pictures with drug lords in the back ground. The drug Lord and his helpers will do anything to destroy those pictures. Will her ex boyfriend be able to keep her save?I loved this book, and I hope you enjoy it too! I really enjoyed reading a Christian action packed thriller! I will be looking for more books by Susan Sleeman. Here is a sample from chapter 5Sirens wound through the air. A shooting would bring every available officer in the area. Probable an ambulance wail mixed in, too. He ran back to Jenie. Her eyes were glassy with shock. One hand pressed firmly against Ashley's stomach, the other circling her own waist. "You okay?" He dropped down next to her, stowing his gun so he didn't draw fire from arriving officers who could mistake him for the intruder. "no," She answered, her voice not more than a whisper. Her glazed eyes coupled with her own admission weren't good signs. He hoped the medics hurried. She looked as if she might pass out.

I liked the suspense part of the story. It was great and a good ending. I really like romance and suspense stories combined. My favorites are always when the couple in the story has a history of a break up or misunderstanding. This one however had too much back and forth reasoning with the woman going over the same things in her mind over why she broke up with the hero of the story. I thought the reason for her breakup was kind of stupid until I found out a little more what was behind her reasoning. Like I've said in other reviews though, writers can't write about perfect people all the time. There are people like her with low self esteem that think in their minds that no one could ever love them. I really liked Ethan. I did like the method the author used to finally pull Jeannie toward the right direction. She was the type of person that is hard to like though. I don't know how Ethan fell in love with her in the first place but that shows what a great character he was.

I love a good suspense book and this one delivers. This is the first book in "The Justice Agency" series of books which details 5 siblings who run their own private detective agency. There is a good balance of romance and suspense and I thoroughly enjoyed the importance that is placed on relying on God to meet our needs. I didn't end up figuring out "whodunit" until much later in the book, which is always a pleasant surprise while reading suspense novels. The characters are interesting and Ms. Sleeman does a nice job developing them. I did enjoy meeting the rest of the Justice siblings and look forward to reading their stories in the remaining books. The plot keeps moving throughout and is certainly a page-turner. Overall a nice job and great message.

I have an adopted granddaughter and loved the story that our family have lived the same life and now have great grandchildren another generation started. Adoption is such a wonderful time of helping others and protecting children thank you Susan for the story am starting book 2 right now

Especially the one about cooking beef at low temperatures, and then searing. Everything you know about cooking isn't wrong, but it can stand some modern day tweaking, supported by impartial experimentation. This is a cook book for those of us who actually read instruction manuals. I never liked cooking because my instruction has always been given without much reasoning. That never worked for me in school, and it never worked for me after school. I am mostly self-taught in everything, and Cook's Illustrated approaches teaching/learning the same way I do. And because they did the research and experimentation, and explain in great detail how and why things work, you can trust that their recipes are complete and foolproof. You may ultimately prefer a different recipe for the dish, but making theirs will teach you how to improve yours. I am reading through it, making note of how they do things I want to try, and then referring back to the book for the cooking details when I make the dish. I also have their pressure cooking book and have made several of those dishes. The science book does not cover pressure cooking, but they explain the how and why in every one of their recipes.

Having relied on Cooks Illustrated recommendations for many of my favourite kitchen tools, buying this book was a no brainer. Needless to say I had high expectations going in, and this book did not disappoint.I'm an avid cook, and while I've had great success with certain types of food, I've been frustrated by inconsistent results in others. (I can't seem to get a consistently moist pot-roast -- reason: my cooking temperature was probably too high; wrong cut of meat + oven braising is better than stovetop since it heats more evenly in more directions)The Science of Good Cooking breaks down why food cooks a certain way, and which techniques are best for what purpose. The book is organized into 50 concepts with recipes reinforcing each concept. There's a section called "why this works" following each recipe, which breaks down the science behind each step -- for instance why use a certain type of marinade, cooking technique, take extra steps, etc to achieve a desired outcome. It's nice that it's not just a list of recipes.Experiments back each concept. Meats were weighed, measured, smashed to determine tenderness, and moisture loss. They came up with a range of ideal resting times for various meats based on actually measuring the amount of juices lost at various times, and they sent food to the science lab to analyze their structure. They even stuck bones on mashed potatoes to test out whether keeping bones on makes food taste better. This book debunked some assumptions I had (acid does not actually make food more tender), and helped me understand other ones better - why salt directly applied on skin makes it more crispy, but if you brined the skin you'd get a different outcome. I also learned that the direction you cut your onion affects its taste - obvious in retrospect, but I never thought about that!I was disappointed I couldn't see a table of contents before purchase, so here are the 50 concepts you will find within the book -1. Gentle Heat Prevents Overcooking2. High Heat Develops Flavor3. Resting Meat Maximizes Juiciness4. Hot Food Keeps Cooking5. Some Proteins Are Best Cooked Twice6. Slow Heating Makes Meat Tender7. Cook Tough Cuts Beyond Well Done8. Tough Cuts Like a Covered Pot9. A Covered Pot Doesn't Need Liquid10. Bones Add Flavor, Fat, and Juiciness11. Brining Maximizes Juiciness in Lean Meats12. Salt Makes Meat Juicy and Skin Crisp13. Salty Marinades work best14. Grind Meat at Home for Tender Burgers15. A Panade Keeps Ground Meat Tender16. Create Layers for a Breading That Sticks17. Good Frying is All About Oil Temperature18. Fat Makes Eggs Tender19. Gentle Heat Guarantees Smooth Custards20. Starch Keeps Eggs from Curdling21. Whipped Egg Whites Need Stabilizers22. Starch Helps Cheese Melt Nicely23. Salting Vegetables Removes Liquid24. Green Vegetables Like it Hot -- Then Cold25. All Potatoes Are Not Created Equal26. Potato Starches Can Be Controlled27. Precooking Makes Vegetables Firmer28. Don't Soak Beans -- Brine 'Em29. Baking Soda Makes Beans and Grains Soft30. Rinsing (Not Soaking) Makes Rice Fluffy31. Slicing Changes Garlic and Onion Flavor32. Chile Heat Resides in Pith and Seeds33. Bloom Spices to Boost Their Flavor34. Not All Herbs Are for Cooking35. Glutamates, Nucleotides Add Meaty Flavor36. Emulsifiers Make Smooth Sauces37. Speed Evaporation When Cooking Wine38. More Water Makes Chewier Bread39. Rest Dough to Trim Kneading Time40. Time Builds Flavor in Bread41. Gentle Folding Stops Tough Quick Breads42. Two Leaveners Are Often Better Than One43. Layers of Butter Makes Flaky Pastry44. Vodka Makes Pie Dough Easy45. Less Protein Makes Tender Cakes, Cookies46. Creaming Butter Helps Cakes Rise47. Reverse Cream for Delicate Cakes48. Sugar Changes Texture (and Sweetness)49. Sugar and Time Makes Fruit Juicer50. Cocoa Powder Delivers Big FlavorThe only thing I would have loved was a trouble shooting / Q&A section - e.g. How do you keep meat from cooling too much when you rest it?Overall a great book if you want to improve your cooking technique, and also if you just want to learn more about why things behave the way they do!Update: Looks like "Look inside" is now available for this book so there's finally a table of contents! :) Since I've been cooking with the new concepts in mind, I'm happy with how my meat dishes (especially the stews) are turning out. I also tried using vodka instead of water to make pie crust (with the tip of putting a heated pan under the pie pan) and the pie crust turned out flaky and delicious as promised.

I think it is time for Cook's Illustrated to come up with some new recipes and factoids - Or maybe I just buy too many of their cookbooks. This cookbook is just a repackaging of their same old information with no photographs. There are lots of lovely drawings, but I like seeing pictures of the at least some of the finished product. If you have even ONE Cook's Illustrated Cookbook, you do not need to buy this one. The only reason I did not give it one or two stars is I felt that it would be unfair. Even though the recipes are over-used, they are good recipes with good directions.

This is a fantastic cookbook. It's also a wonderfully entertaining education on the hows and whys - the science - of cooking. Every recipe I've tried has turned out well - and has taught me something. I own a hard-cover copy, and it has a place of honor on my kitchen bookshelf. Then I bought the Kindle edition. Whoever formatted this book for Kindle has done a superlative job. The formatting actually enhances the reading experience. For example - you are reading an early chapter entitled The Science of the Senses. In the first section (The Five Tastes) there's an interesting discussion of the fifth "taste," umami flavor. You can just read this and go on to the next section on How Taste Works. Or, if you want to understand umami a little more, you can follow the links in that first section to an in-depth discussion of glutamate and nucleotide levels in foods. This is Concept 35 - a section that is more than half-way through the book and yet meshes perfectly with what you read in that introductory chapter. The Concept ends with three recipes specifically engineered to show the best use of glutamate and nucleotides to produce rich meaty flavors -- AND with links to two additional recipes from yet another section of the book that also illustrate techniques associated with enhancing meaty flavors. It's a seamless reading experience that has you wandering through all different parts of this book. When I first did this, I became a little alarmed. How was I ever going to find the recipes again? Have no fear. There is a complete and interactive table of contents. You can readily navigate to each of the "Science of.." chapters, or pick out one of the 50 Concepts and go directly there. In addition, there is a specific page of links that just lists all the recipes. So if you want to cook - hey, it works as a cookbook! The Ebook version of The Science of Good Cooking reminds me of those "Choose your Own Adventure" stories - each time you dip in, you can follow a different path through. Kudos to the editors at America's Test Kitchen.Edited to add:The images in the book were clear, dark enough, and large enough be viewed very easily on my Kindle paperwhite. Tables were always correctly formatted, and fit the pages. The whole thing looked amazingly NICE and professional. Would that other ebooks looked so good!

Wonderful history books! I stumbled upon this series looking to supplement our existing homeschool curriculum--It quickly became our new curriculum! It's written in such an engaging narrative style and does a great job of not only explaining the important events, but the causes of them and reasons for them. It has made history come alive--I'm a history fan for the first time in my life--and it's my 4th and 6th graders' favorite subject. I think this book would work for around 3rd graders through at least middle school, if not high school. I can't begin to count all of the great discussions we've had sparked by these books. We've read 3 volumes and I just ordered the next. My only negative is that the kindle doesn't include all the side notes, as other reviews have mentioned. My kids have enjoyed reading on their tablets for a change, and it's so much more economical if everyone wants their own copy to read, but we are going back to the print for the next volume. I recommend it highly.

These are very well-written books and have a contemporary approach to explaining history to young minds. If you are concerned about 'revisionist history', not to worry...these books are historically accurate. They are well laid out and have interesting side facts as well as illustrations and photos, maps, etc.

We have been using this series for two years now for American history. It is a great backgroud reader. It is colorful and a narrative and the chapters are short which makes for easy lesson planning. What we do is read through this series in the background and on top of that we do "projects" on major subjects. Right now we're doing a lapbook on the Constitution. Our next project (unit study) will be on slavery. I nevery get any complaints on having to read this book. In fact, my son usually forgets to stop and reads too far!

My daughter read most of this series in 8th grade as her home-school history text. She really enjoyed it. It sparked a deeper interest in history for her. I have just bought the first four books which we were missing so that my 7th and 9th graders can read the whole series in this next school year. I think these books tell the history in more of a story form and go into more detail than regular textbooks. That is what makes it so interesting for students.

These books make history interesting. I love the entire series, as do my 8 and 10 yr olds.

We used the series while homeschooling. It was not just a lot of dry facts to be memorized (like when I was in school). It told the story in an interesting way and put it into context. The list of other resources was helpful, too.

I was very disappointed that all the pictures, captions and side notes in the original book were not included in the Kindle version. There should be some notification so that the purchaser is aware prior to purchase. I feel that my child is missing vital information by not having these included.

I gave this book 5 stars because it totally engages my students. They understand the "story" part of history with the book, and are very enthusiastic about it. Although it leaves out many details, using it in conjunction with a classic textbook provides students with a rich learning experience.

The Lost Girl, by Anne Ursu

From School Library Journal

Gr 3–6—Ursu's latest novel follows the story of Iris and Lark as they start fifth grade. Iris prides herself on her knowledge, rationality, and assertiveness while Lark is more dreamy and artistic. When they find out that they have been assigned different teachers for the first time ever, their world is shaken. Lark's shyness and anxiety seem to make her wilt and Iris has difficulty connecting to her new classmates while worrying about her twin. Meanwhile, a new store called "Treasure Hunters" sets up shop in their Minneapolis neighborhood. The odd messages on the sign intrigue the sisters, setting Iris on the trail of an ominous mystery as Lark retreats inside herself. Although the sisters initially seem to be too purposely disparate in character, the characterization is not all that it seems. In fact, the magical realism of the book allows an almost metaphoric view of the world as Iris grapples with both supernatural and psychological threats. The style of the novel echoes the mysteriousness of the plot: the viewpoint shifts between Iris, an unnamed observer, and the omniscient chronicler of the disappearance of state treasures. The prose is lovely, unafraid to echo the mysterious questions posed or Iris's comforting refrain that she and Lark have better outcomes when they are together. The sense of adventure and mystery make this appealing to a wide audience. VERDICT A beautiful, timeless tale of love conquering darkness in the midst of mystery and the angst of change. A must-have for any middle grade collection.—Erin Reilly-Sanders, University of Wisconsin-Madison

This book is magic. No, I don't mean it's about magic -- although magic there is, to be sure. No, I mean exactly that -- this book is magic. The magic of sisters. The magic of friends you didn't know you had, until you most needed them. The magic of discovering you've been so very wrong about so very much (yes, that's magic, too). The magic of losing yourself, and finding yourself again. The magic of defeating the monsters in our lives. Most of all -- and I have to admit bias here -- the magic of those who live too much in their own heads; who lose things and spill things and stumble because they are more intent on what they're thinking than what they are doing; whose minds spin story upon story of how things could go . . . not well. And who end up astonishing the very people who thought they needed to be protected. And then, of course, there's the cat.

I write this fully realizing that book perfection is in the eye of the reader. So what. Don’t at me. This book is perfection. It is honorable. It is spectacular in its prose, its characters, its story, and ITS MESSAGES.THE LOST GIRL has found me. It has helped make me whole again. It has given me a deeper perspective in who I am and what I can do with my voice, with my friends, FOR my friends. EVERY CHILD needs these kinds of messages.THE LOST GIRL is distinguished. It needs to be in the hands of every MG & YA reader in this country for all time, but especially at this moment. It is perfection in a beautiful binding.

It's a book that remembers what it's like to be a child, and all the angry, terrified moments of dealing with a world that doesn't make sense. And it really understands sisters, too.The Minneapolis facts and the crowd also made me very happy. Best book for this age group since _Breadcrumbs_, which also made me cry. But in a really cathartic way.

This is one of those special books that grownups can enjoy, kids will love, and the world will benefit from. Beyond the empowering message woven into the tale, it’s a story about friendship and magic—set in the real world, with its very real dangers. This book is hilarious, heartwarming, and absolutely thrilling in turns. It will go down as one of the best most important books of the year.

Spoiler Alert: I don’t typically do this in my reviews, but there will be some spoiler-y discussion (in the middle two paragraphs), so please proceed with caution. My thanks to Walden Pond Press and Edelweiss+ for providing an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.More than any other book I’ve read, The Lost Girl defends the middle grade girl as a person to be valued, respected, and taken seriously. The novel posits that every young woman needs a girl gang of her own, a group of friends and fellow warriors to lift each other up and prove to the world (and themselves) that girls are a force to be reckoned with. Everybody needs to read this book: adults who dismiss girls for being insubstantial or overly emotional; boys who think girls are weak or silly; women who need to be reminded of what they were, what they could have been, and what they can still be; and above all, young girls who will see themselves in these pages and know that they are worthy, they are capable, and they are filled with magic that can do amazing things when they work together. There are times when this dark fairy tale feels like a howl of rage, directed at a society that wants to make sure its damsels stay in distress. Though I think it will age well, this book is very timely: the villain of the piece is revealed to bear an uncanny resemblance to a certain world leader. He has a vast collection of the world’s rarest and most valuable objects, but he doesn’t appreciate their true value; he simply acquires them as status symbols to prove to the world that he is an important person of wealth and class. He doesn’t believe in science and he uses up finite resources without any consideration for the future or the needs of other people; even certain pompous verbal mannerisms call to mind this Individual. In the most frightening parts of the book, the villain abuses girls and treats them like property. Young girls will relate to this allegory all too well, since they are growing up in a society that sends misogynistic messages through its popular culture and elected leaders. The characters are hardly damsels waiting for someone to come rescue them, though. They are sisters, superheroes, and girl gang warriors, and they save the day. They save themselves, and they show the girls reading the story that they can save themselves as well.Anne Ursu sees the truth beneath the surface of the world. Her words are lyrical and poetic; when you read a particularly beautiful passage, you want to linger on it, holding the words in your mouth to savor the taste and the texture. Since nearly every other paragraph had a passage like that, it took me quite a while to finish the book, but it was worth every second. The Lost Girl belongs on every bookshelf — it is a compelling mystery, a beautiful ode to sisterhood and friendship, and a heartbreaking exploration of finding yourself when you didn’t even realize you were lost.

Few people have achieved the perfect balance of "classic fairy tale voice" and modern sensibilities; Anne Ursu is one of those few.Her newest MG novel tackles identity, self-reliance, confusion and - perfectly - aspects of the mess that is our ingrained reliance on the patriarchy. Strong, smart, three-dimensional girls take on magic and monsters in a brilliant novel.

Iris and Lark are twins. Iris is the practical one. Lark is the dreamer. The two have always been together. Iris taking care of Lark. Lark relying on Iris. But in fifth grade, things change. They are placed in separate classes. The Lost Girl is the story of how the two cope with this situation.Interwoven throughout the main story is a subplot of the arrival of a mysterious antique shop, its quirky owner, and a case of disappearing items. Why have things gone missing? Why are there crows in the town? Is magic real? It gets downright sinister when the story reaches its climax. So much so that sensitive readers may find themselves hiding under their covers. It's the subplot that keeps readers turning the pages. The Lost Girl is an imaginative coming-of-age tale. Children who have experienced being separated from a sibling, twin or otherwise, can relate. The author does a nice job of getting into each of the protagonists' heads. By the end of the story, each girl experiences personal growth and learns something new. The only thing that could have been developed a little more is the backstory of the villain. Readers may be left wondering why the villain was so evil. The Lost Girl is a very good middle grade read. Recommended for children in grades 4-6. -Sherry Ellis, author of Bubba and Squirt' Big Dig to China
