I have loved fabric all my life. My mother sewed, but no one in my family quilted.So, I started out at ground zero so to speak. I am also not in a place which has access toany in-person classes. So, I have been relying on web videos and books to teach some things.Many times, craft books are more of an homage to what the author deems as their awesomeness,but don't really teach you anything at all. This is NOT one of those books!I've already purchased several books on quilting. While they all have some good information, nonewere teaching things that I really wanted to know, like how to make that frame-effect around an art quilt,or properly attach a binding. They were mostly approached as if the reader already knew all the basics.This reader didn't.Anyway, thought I would try yet another book, to see what sort of info I might be able to get to improvemy own skills. Note that I also love books in general, so I want to mention that the book size is nice,it feels nice in your hands, and the pages are printed on decent paper, not cheap junk.The photographs are plentiful, colorful and helpful. (I've had some books use only black and white picturesto perhaps save on ink costs? But it detracts from the book!)On to the information in the book -YAY!! This book doesn't assume I am a quilting goddess who just wanted to purchase another book.(I might get that title some day, but that's a long ways off!)The author writes in a conversational manner, which I appreciate. (I write that way too - anyone who readsmy reviews knows that one already! LOL) It makes it more like a class on quilting with the teacher right there.I've been reading it every day since I got it, and it has helped me to want to try a few new techniques.(It also confirms my need for a different sewing machine, which I had already known. Mine is almost new, butyou can't drop the feed dogs, and covering doesn't help much on this model. It is more for sewing than quilting.)While everyone's artistic interpretation is always going to differ (that's what makes it art!),the author explains how to achieve certain effects, how to create special additions to your art quilt, andtouches on how to "paint" with thread (she has another book devoted solely to thread painting as well).She explains how to use fabric values, rather than color or pattern alone to achieve a visual impact.She also explains about how to do portraits to have the best impact.Shortcomings - there were a couple. I think she could have delved a little deeper into HOW to get the valuedeterminations from your photographs or pictures. She mentions she uses Photoshop and Photoshop Elements to get themherself, but doesn't touch much at all about how to actually do it. Note that this does not bother me - I already knowhow, and have read about it in other quilting books. Perhaps she feels it was already sufficiently covered, and mightbe redundant. However, it would have been helpful to cover a little bit more to help someone for whom this mightbe their only quilting book purchase.I also feel she felt short in her explanations of her own quilting examples when it came to portraiture. Shehas some really nice photos of her own work which she uses as an example, but she leaves the reader to decided forthemselves if she did a strictly value-based fabric collage or printed a photo onto computer fabric and just enhancedwith thread. There are references here and there, but there are also some unidentified examples. On page 75,for example, in the quilt at the bottom of the page, I would like to know if the people there were printed directlyfrom a photograph to computer fabric and thread-enhanced, or if she pieced them from fabric and then thread enhanced.Overall - I highly recommend this book!It is enjoyable to read, actually informational, doesn't assume too much, and will help me improve my art quilt skills.Unless you are already an award-winning art quilter, I think everyone would find this one a very useful additionto their personal quilt book library.Great job by the author!

If you’re looking for a detailed introduction to pictorial quilts, then Photo-Inspired Art Quilts is it! Clear instructions, wonderful pictures and illustrations, a top notch teach yourself instructional book for how you too can turn your favorite photos into professional level art quilts using your computer, fabric and a few simple tools. I am also of the opinion that if you think outside the box like me, with simple modifications these instructions could also be applied to paper collage interpretations of your photos quite easily. This book is in one of my top 10 favorite art book slots in my bookcase because it teaches techniques that help illuminate the fact that not all art is painted or sculpted, that real art is sometimes also made with fabric.

I have been looking, searching and buying all sorts of books on the topic of creative "photos-to-art-quilts", this one hits the high "HIGH" mark on inspiration, clear and thorough directions. The author does a great job in walking the reader through the basics of good design, composition, photo selections and getting your ideas actually done! The included companion DVD is fantastic as it was so much better yet to actaully see and hear how the author achieved such fantastic results! The demonstrations of thread-painted accents and applique really cleared up some questions I had while reading the book. A lot of design and planning is done with the use of a computer which is explained in easy to understand details but the author has also offered simple and clear directions for what some might call "low-tech" alternatives. All the steps of making a "photo-inspired" art quilt are covered in very clear writing and step by step photos. I do both traditional quilts and art quilts, if I could give it 6 stars ****** I would!

This will appeal to beginners and experienced quilters alike. There are some good project instructions, some design principles and some good tips for using photo enhancement to improve the composition. Of course it cannot cover every aspect in depth, but, in the body of the book, every word and every illustration is worth looking at. Leni's interest in scenes containing people doing something ordinary, which she interprets with some stunning fabric choices, has broadened my view of what makes a good pictorial quilt.

Leni Levenson Wiener is an excellent writer. Her book explains quite simply and in a very thorough way how to take your photos and turn them into art quilts. The pictures in the book only add to the written information.I would recommend this book to anyone has been wondering how they can use a photo they've taken and turn it into an art quilt.

I wish I could give this guide more stars and I wish I had it a few months ago before our cruise. We've been to St. Thomas several times and we just did the beach last time because we felt we had seen everything before. Thanks to Valerie I now can't wait to go back and explore some of the areas that she wrote about.I'm a planner and do a lot of research before going on vacation. One answer I see a lot to questions about free internet onshore or the best place to eat is - ask a crew member or follow them when they get off the ship. Crew members know where to eat, where to get free wi-fi, the best places to shop, etc. and Valerie put it all in a neat little package for us.What I also loved about this book was the information about the behind the scenes of living on a cruise ship. We love doing tours of the ship and on our last cruise we were able to go through the crew areas such as the crew bars and crew dining. Talking with crew members and hearing about their families, life and culture at home is a favorite of mine. Knowing that they don't see their families for months at a time makes me appreciate the hard work that they do and how lucky I am to be vacationing on a cruise ship. I loved getting more insight about all of this from Valerie.This guide is one that I will most definitely keep and refer to when we are lucky enough to visit one of these places again.

The book is short and an easy read (larger print) so that's a plus. Not as informative as I anticipated. Although there is a table of contents, it's of no value as there are no page numbers in the book. The author was a crew member so there are a few tidbits of information about cruise ships. I would not recommend this book for anyone looking for actual island information and what to do in port. This is more for an intro to cruising for teens or young adults so would make a nice gift in that regard.

This is a great travel companion for a tour of the Caribbean. I was born in the region and love its natural beauty. I've been cruising, and I've often felt that passengers don't have much time to savor the real beauty of the Caribbean -- the hidden gems you just can't locate in a three hour port of call. This book helps you unearth those gems! Now, no matter how much or how little time you have, the beauty of the Caribbean is at your disposal. Bon voyage.

We are taking our 18 & 20 year old daughters on a cruise in a few weeks. I have passed on a lot to them for two reasons. 1) Coming from someone else, it may be heeded! 2) There are things I know but may not remember to mention. This was a great reminder.The knowledge I feel I gained for the majority of the ports we are traveling to will be useful. I'm even more excited now than I was before purchasing and reading this book.

The book told the story well, but as the author explained, we all like to do different things for fun. Cruising was life for her, it's my time to relax. If you don't dive or drink a lot the majority of the suggestions won't interest you.

Good insightful information. Covers a lot of ports and the author shares her experiences. Granted the enjoyment will vary person to person but she shares why she liked it and as a traveller you can judge from there. If you are cruising to any of the ports written about in this book; I think it's worth reading. It's part diary and part reference log.

I LOVED this book! As a frequent cruiser on Royal Caribbean ships and one who will be visiting a lot of these islands soon I was very interested in the information. I also liked the insight into life as a crew member.

It was interesting to read about what happens behind the scenes in the crew areas, but tips about the islands make reference more to crew than to cruisers. The writing is weak, and needed a bit of editing.

Anyone interested in genealogy or the history of the Midwest should find Pioneer Women very worthwhile reading. As a native Kansan of advanced age, I could relate to many of the stories and chapters. I could imagine my Mother, Father or Grandparents telling each event. I would think that living in Kansas would be a bonus for enjoyment from reading this book but I sincerely believe segments would appeal to everyone and the Book in full would be a very wise use of time and excellent entertainment.

I was amazed to read about the hardships these women faced and how determined they were to overcome and succeed. It was inspiring.

.This is a great book that everyone should read.. If you think you have it hard today read this and thank God how blessed you are to live in this day and time. Our pioneers had a rough life and they were tough tough people. Makes you wonder how we here in the United States today would do living the lifestyle that our pioneer ancestors did. This is a five star read.

This book was very interesting. It told in great detail what life was like in Kansas in the late 19th century. It made me realize that we always think things are bad now. This book will make you appreciate being here now instead of back then.

I read this book years ago and wanted a copy to reread again. It is the only book I have laughed and cried through. The accounts of the pioneer women gives us a tiny idea of the life of those prairie women. I cannot begin to comprehend the hardships they faced, how they endured and the profound loneliness they experienced. It is a book for anyone who is interested in history of women of the prairie. I am glad I found it so I can have a copy again.

History lovers will really enjoy this book. It is filled with interesting information and first-hand accounts of women who helped settle the Kansas Frontier. Most of us heard about the hardships people faced while traveling west in the 1800s, but reading about those hardships from the women who experienced them is especially enlightening.

Very interesting history from a woman's life. My husband also has enjoyed reading this.

Love the stories in this book! I’d recommend it!

I read this book from beginning to end. I never really understood what it took for the founding fathers to write the U.S. Constitution, or what they wanted it to mean, until I read this book. It should be required reading in all U.S. high school history and social studies classes.

I would recommend this for probably second grade and up, but it may be too disturbing for a younger audience because of the level of historical accuracy. If your child is particularly sensitive, shelve this one for the next year or two, and stick to Charlie Brown.

Here are some quotes from the book that I wish I knew about before I bought it:"They've been warned that Indians may attack them."..."Suddenly they see Indians! But the Indians are frightened and run away.""Indians are sighted nearby. They come closer and closer. Then one day an Indian walks right into the settlement. The children are terrified. But the Indian smiles and says Welcome."..."They want to trust the friendly Indian."It says that Squanto liked the Pilgrims and decided to live with them.It refers to Massasoit as an Indian king, which makes no sense.It says that the "Indians" and the Pilgrims made a treaty that they will not harm each other. It says that the treaty was kept for 54 years and refers to the "Indians" as their new friends.I'm going to return this book and find one that is more historically accurate and less whitewashed. I made the mistake of reading this book to my 5 year old and got very tired of correcting the language from "Indians" to "Native Americans" all the time.

What a great book to own. We gave it to our grandson and he loved it. History is so very important for our children to know about this great history of how our first Thanksgiving came about!

We see her grow from a young girl who spends her happiest days playing and exploring the world around her with her friends and helping her mother with her younger sister. Her closest friends "jumping Fish" (her brother) and "Falcon" are her constant companions as they grow up day by day from children with not a care in the world, to young adults facing the world around them. Her relationship with Falcon changes as they grow older as well.From friendship grows love and they vow to be married one day when the time is right and Falcon has proven himself to be a man and worthy of marriage. To the three of them, life cannot be better, their threesome will stay close with the marriage and they will not have to part. Falcon prepares for his first hunt and with his return, plans to ask for Echo in marriage, a plan that seems perfect to all three of them.All seems happy and carefree for Echo until the day she happens to be in a place where a child falls from a high mesa and she catches it nimbly in her outstretched arms. From that day forward, her life changes in ways that she never dreamed possible....and all because she saved the life of this one child. For the child she saved is a child who belongs to the priest's and their group who live high on the mesa. And with the news of her heroic action a priest asks for her hand in marriage.Echo is crushed but knows that to ask for her hand is a compliment to her family and she cannot even think of refusing. So she is swept up into a marriage to a man she has no love for and who is not interested in her for a typical wife, but for someone who will be kind to him and help him as he grows older. Her husband sees the wisdom in such a request and grants it thus beginning her studies as a student of the mysterious ways of their people.As the book continues, we see the tribe growing more and more aware that in order to survive, they must move on. For they have used up most of the natural resources of the area and as they years go by, it is harder and harder for them to prepare for the winters that lie ahead. Sadly they realize the futility of staying and one by one they move on leaving those who are too sick or old to stay and die where they lived. Echo stays behind caring for and burying those who die, as she feels she must do for her tribe. Her husband grows more ill as the days go by until he too passes on and Echo is left to bury her husband by herself. It is Echo's footsteps that are then the last to leave the mesa and all the memories it held for her people.After reading this, I found myself thoughtful, wondering if in fact this could have happened to the people of Chimney rock. I wondered if perhaps they, like the people in this book, slowly realized that though they had a wonderful city built on the mesa, that it no longer met their needs, and beautiful or not, they must move on to survive. I would highly recommend this book for young readers of all ages. It is filled with thoughtful moments, historical references to the lifestyle of Echo and her people and realistic characters as well. It is a book rich with meaning and thought provoking situations. This book is one that would make an excellent addition to any home or classroom library and one that is well worth the price. It is a wonderful way to look at the life of Native Americans and to see all aspects of their life in an easy to read and understandable manner. The reader is at once swept back in time and learns about an America that existed well before 1492. I am sure that this book will find itself in the hands of many middle school students and teachers who want to learn more about this period of history-and read a book that is of the same quality as Scott O'Dell's great novel Island of the Blue Dolphins.

When I was younger I read ISLAND OF THE BLUE DOLPHINS, and it became my favorite book of all time to this day. Never before have I found a novel to compare to that one, until now. I use this book multiple times each ride, it is absolutely indispensible. The book lists trail numbers on most trails, which make getting around easy.

When I purchased a Nevada Road & Recreation Atlas that had missing pages, Benchmark offered to correct the problem immediately. They responsed to my email in less than 24 hours. I've used 3 of their Atlases for different states and find them extremely useful.

I use this atlas for it's great off-road detail to plan and execute ATV trips. This is the BEST atlas I have found for off-road detail in Nevada and it hasn't let me down yet. It must be the best, since others in our ATV Club have it and refer to it often. I never see another atlas on the trail besides this one!

I looked through the book and didn'r buy it..but lter that day I regretted not picking it up..thanks amazon!for anyone who feels that what castaneda shared is useful and indeed powerfull, this book is a very well put together reference guide!
