This book started out with promise. Despite the circumstances, who wouldn't want to go away for awhile in a country house in France? The book was full of long, drawn out, flowery descriptions of scenes. I enjoy descriptions of places, but it was a bit too much. I think the use of this was to divert attention from the fact that the story was rather weak and the characters lacked depth.The main character went to escape Christmas, yet ended up having a big party and fell in love rather quickly. Then there were the descriptions of food, which was really boring. I think this was wrapped up rather shallowly and quickly, so much more could have come out of this story. I didn't always get the British words that were used but able to figure most of them out. I had to skim the last 3rd of the book, it just got to be too boring. Could have been a good book, but wasn't.

The first book I read of Ms. Valpy's was The Beekeeper's Promise. I happened upon her writing when Amazon sent an email advertising her book. The was a fortuitous day! I am a writer and love good writing, but well-written books are hard to find. Her's are great! I chose this one to read next. It's' a heart felt story of a young woman working her way through the grief process after losing a baby, pre-term. I lost my daddy seven months ago. I've found solace in this book. I don't know the story behind it, but I know there is one. The book was born out of pain and beautifully portrays the moments when a spark of life is rekindled in a broken heart. I'm going to give it as a gift to some friends who are also grieving the loss of loved ones. Thank you, Ms. Valpy.

Having already read Fiona’s first two books I couldn’t wait to jump into this one. She blew it out of the park if you’re looking for a fun, clean, love story to enjoy. While the first two were plots that we can sympathize with but still laugh over (losing an aunt/job/security/fiancé) this one had a sadder aspect to it in the loss of a baby, yet I felt that Fiona’s writing about it truly expressed the pain without making it a “sad and depressing” book. In fact, while it touched on the pain I found it to be laugh-out-loud funny at times as the main character works her way to wholeness and love. It was written superbly and with sensitivity without taking away from the fun love story. Her writing is interesting, I love the French aspect of the setting, and the characters are well-written. It was pure pleasure to read and I was disappointed that there weren’t more to read. I never sign up for anything but I immediately signed up to be notified when the next book comes out!

Throughout the story I really enjoyed reading about France and the French countryside. The characters were interesting especially Eliane. As I read, it's really interesting and eye opening for me to stipulating the way to learn the English definitions to Frenchbwords and their pronunciations. A good read I only wish there was more exploration of the relationship between Didier and the heroine. Would've liked to seen more.passion between them even though they're grieving. Enjoyed the book and the French cuisine.

Fiona Valpy is an incredible author writing three books that entwine across the years with one village. Any books can be enjoyed alone, but I highly recommend you read all three of her books. All her books show in detail her characters inner thoughts and strengths. The stories are very well thought out and authentic for the times the characters are living in. I can't wait for her next book.

I generally do not read books of this genre but, given the toxic tenor of the world these days, I felt the need for something warm and uplifting. I was sorry when I finished this one because it meant there were no more of this series. I find myself thinking about the characters in this book quite often.

The French for Christmas is a erfect Christmas read.Evie is not looking forward to Christmas, she is heartbroken after a year grief and loss. The offer of her neighborur's holiday cottage in an isolated hamlet in France seems the ideal way for her to avoid the festive season and it's demands. Once settled she finds friendship, consolation and a renewed confidence in herself. Slowly she begins to recover. She finds solace in company and cooking. The French for Christmas is a positive and heartwarming story, well written and engaging. I especially liked the menu suggestions and culinary ideas sprinkled through the book,

This book was heartwarming and delightful. After I finished it I had to hunt through my kindle for my other 2 Fiona Valpy books and read them over again. I enjoyed them even more than I did on the first "go round". The characters in her books are believable and you grow to like them so well that you are sorry when the story is over. I will absolutely watch for more books from this author....very enjoyable read!

Another wonderful book by Fiona Valpy. It grabs you and will not let go as you go through all the difficult days with a lost woman after her losses. You will experience sadness, reawakening , happiness and joy.A very good book.
