Will Beemer is a founding member of the Timber Framers Guild and served as Co-Executive Director for 11 years. With his wife, Michele, he owns and operates the Heartwood School for the Homebuilding Crafts in Washington, Massachusetts, which has been teaching courses in timber framing, home building and other trades since 1978. Beemer has taught timber framing around the world, including in Patagonia (with Rocky Mountain Workshops), at Palomar College in California, at North House Folk School in Minnesota, and through numerous Guild workshops and projects. What a very easy to understand and well illustrated book on building a timber frame. I am but a humble woman, with a little experience in woodwork, but I marvel at the workmanship that is explained in this book - no easy screw and nail joins here, but proper mortise, tenons, dovetail and other joins. This building is a work of art, and will probably withstand whatever weather is thrown at it. It is lovely to see craftsmanship such as this passed on to the next generation - yes it takes longer, yes it requires patience but the end result is fabulous.This book was supplied to me in return for a honest and unbiased review.

I'm building my first timber frame building, which is a shed. I have read six different books on the matter, including from Jack Sobon and Tedd Benson. This book is by far the best book I have ever read on the subject of actually going through the process of making the structure in a detailed step-by-step way. For a beginner, this is invaluable. This book doesn't go into all the history and theories so much, but I didn't want that in this book. I got all the history and theory from other books, now I want better "newbie" instructions on how to get out there and build it. With this book, I am finally so convinced that I know what I am doing that I can go out there and build. I ordered my white oak timbers from a local sawmill, bought the basic tools, and am all fired up and ready to go. To summarize, if you want to actually go out and build a timber frame (vs. a historical read on history and theory), buy this book! Thank you Will Beemer for this masterpiece!

Love this book!! I had studied timber framing for a while with books like "A Timber Framers Workshop" but this book actually takes you step by step on how to build a small TimberFrame structure. I've started building a shed based on the one in the book and its been extremely helpful. Lots of helpful drawings, photos, illustrations and explanations. The author doesn't go into a lot of detail about theory and other types of joinery, but there are plenty of other books about that. This book tells you everything you need to know to get started timber framing by building a small and simple structure. Highly recommend it!

This was a really excellent book. I liked that it went into all the necessary detail to construct a small timber framed building and even provided variations on the base model for additional space or other considerations (such as storage for a large tractor).The approach to the book is very straightforward and I found all the diagrams helpful in describing some of the complexities of the craft.It was also nice to learn about different approaches to timber framing, most specifically "square rule", and how that works. It was also helpful to learn about the alternatives and to understand why they adopt the square rule approach in this book.Overall it is a beautiful well written book well worth the money. I would recommend it.

I bought this because I was trying to learn about timber framing with no previous experience. It is a great book and filled in holes I had from another book I bought. This teaches the square rule method well with lots of pictures and such. It provides plans and practical ways you can modify those plans to build your own outbuilding or small home. I recommend this book.

This book is awesome. It is well-written, has lots of excellent colour photos. Most importantly, it revealed the difference between this art and craft of timber frame building, compared to the mass-produced stick building common today.

First book on timber framing and this does a great job explaining the basics and how to build. I was able to use the instructions to build a timber frame mail box first and really enjoyed the process. Looking forward to using the cabin plans in the book to build a cabin/shed at some point. Very happy and would definitely purchase again.

My suggestion, if you're going to actually open this book and especially if you are going to use it frequently, invest the extra money in the hard cover!I'm sure this is not the seller's fault, but I bought this in paperback to save on cost. I haven't used it that much at this point, but the spine has broken and a large chunk is now completely loose from the book. And each time I try to turn one of those pages, no matter how carefully, they rip off as well. I am super (slightly neurotic) about all of my books so I'm not handling this one too roughly. For the price of this book and how often I'm sure people will use it, they should do something about the spine. I know a few other people who this has happened to.

I was a little hesitant purchasing this book based on the feedback other buyers have shared; I was however in need of it and the price certainly convinced me to give it a try. The book I received has some printing issues, but not nearly as bad as what others have experienced. My copy is printed on two different stocks of papers. The first half of the book is printed on glossy paper and the other half on regular stock perhaps 24lb or 32lb. Other than that and a few pages printed at a slight angle the book serves its purpose and though it is used it is in great condition. My copy has no misspelled words nor duplicate or missing pages as others have reported.

I recently realized that this DSM is missing pages 421-468. The book is seemingly in perfect condition and aside from this huge issue, which was unaware to me until I needed to reference certain diagnoses and realized the pages are COMPLETELY GONE!

I understand everyone's frustration about it not being spiral bound. However, and I know this costs slightly more money for something that should have been thought of before it was mass produced, you can get it spiraled at a place like Office Max for less than $10. They will slightly shave off the binding and spiral it for you, making it actually functional for it's purpose. Just thought I should share this :).Happy diagnosing!

ITEM IS A BOOTLEG copy. As a clinical social worker, I used to get a copy of the DESK REFERENCE issued by my employer and the quality of this one compared to others I've had is night and day. The copy purchased through Amazon has: 1) wonky spiral binding that makes it difficult to turn the pages, 2) pages are stuck together at the punch hole for spiral binding and tear when trying to separate, 3) paper quality is ultra thin and circa 1980's xerox copy machine in quality and texture, 4) some of the holes for spiral binding are actually punched through the writing/descriptions on the page, 5) many pages are printed CROOKED, 6) headings on some pages are actually "smeared" or running off the page. Amazon, you need to investigate this seller!!!

This is a poor version compared to the one I bought in 1994. The pages are tissue thin. I have had it not even a year and it is falling apart and I rarely use it...seriously, rarely use it and it is cheap!! Not impressed with this book at all!! Do yourself a favor and find one in a bookstore and try it out rather than buy online. I should have returned it but...oh, well, that's my bad! But seriously, if you do order one online, make sure you can return it if you don't like it.

The price is too good to be true. The book took weeks to arrive and now that it has, it's missing pages 215-244 and has 245-276 twice.

Politically Correct Holiday Stories is a collection of several well-known Christmas stories changed to be politically correct. There are a few short ones (like Frosty and Rudolph) and then a long one (A Christmas Carol). They are all written in a sarcastic, over the top PC, way. There are two non-politically correct Christmas stories at the end, one about Santa’s childhood and one that was a surprisingly sweet story about a cabbie and possibly talking animals. It’s a fun, quick read. I recommend reading it!

Funny for the time, but the political climate has changed a lot since this was released. Might be better to look for an updated one. Still, at the time of purchase, it was pretty funny so 5 stars, retroactive

This has been such a family favorite that I finally had to give away my copy to a relative who loves reading it in the Christmas season. The copy I bought now is to replace mine. One of my sons said he thought the stories were kind of negatve, but you have to approach this with kind of a droll sense of humor. All of the "Politically Correct" stories are really funny, especially if you are "chronologically gifted."

As with all of James Finn Garner's books, humorous and witty, a very funny read. Hard to put this one down as the twist on familiar holiday stories is at once clever and very entertaining. You will enjoy this book, I know I did.

It is about time someone came up with a humorous, sarcastic comment on our political correctness. Loved the stories as told by Mr. Garner and sent a copy to my west coast son-in-law for Christmas.

Nice little book. Gave as gifts to a few friends who work in very politically correct environments

I really look forward to reading this book. I enjoyed the author's politically correct takes on other fairy tales.

My son is a fan of this show. He really liked this book. He said it had differences from the show, but he liked that it wasn't exactly the same. The graphic novel has six different chapters. The artistry is different than the show, but my son like that also. It is a different way of experiencing the Deep if you are familiar with the show, this doesn't take away from the content of the book though.

My daughter loves this so much. She’s five so read it to her. A big plus for me is the very like-able, multicultural family. I wish there were more.

Finally a book that's not full of potty humor. No violence or bratty attitudes. An intelligent family going on adventures. My son and I love this book as well as the show on Netflix. Buy!

Great read

A multi-ethnic family of underwater explorers (a.k.a. science superheroes!), amazingly funny writing, an art style that looks like animation in the best way, and the best pet fish EVER. The Deep started as a comic and became a Netflix series, I think (?), before Boom re-issued this graphic novel in November 2017. It's one of my favorite kids' comics in the past couple years for fun, adventure, and submarine living. If another volume appears, I'll be pre-ordering it for sure.
