I had great hopes for Notes to a Software Team Leader, but unfortunately ended up being disappointed by this book and the advise it gives. Sure, it has useful tips, but then there are things (e.g. commitment language) that I just don't agree with. Also, the book is thinner than you think as the second half is actually filled with articles or blog posts. The experience of the author is that teams go through 3 different phases, unsurprisingly: 1) Survival, 2) Learning, 3) Self-organizing, each having a section with one or more chapters related to the leaders role when the team is in that phase. The survival phase is when there is panic and no time to learn. The learning phase is when the team gradually learns to solve their own problems and the self-organizing phase is where the team is able to solve problems without your help. The author state that maybe 5% of the teams are in the self-organizing phase and the majority in the survival.He then goes on to explain the kind of leadership style you ought to use for each of these phases. For the survival phase the main leadership style is command control, for learning phase it is more a coaching style, and for self-organizing more a facilitation style (not black/white). Each chapter explains a couple of techniques and ideas for teams in that phase. Though, the majority of the book (almost 40%) focuses on the learning phase.Roy has some great ideas and some good stories to share, yet I was uncomfortable with some of his advise and the tone of the book. I've experienced a lot of teams, but the 3 phases do not really match my experience. Neither does the style link well to the describes phases. If you have a team in survival then there might not be time for learning, but if you can get them goal and purpose then I don't believe you must survive by applying command control management. But I was most uncomfortable with the commitment language. Adding precision in language when there is often no precision in the task doesn't feel right to me. And most organizations don't need more focus on commitments, but more focus on delivery. Anyways.All in all, the book is not bad, yet I wouldn't recommend it. It is small and doesn't contain a huge amount of new information. I'd probably do 3 stars for the book itself, but will reduce a start because of the random collection of articles towards the end of the book. 2 stars.

This is a pretty good book for first time software leaders to get an introduction to everything they will need to learn from a mentor. The book alone will give you the ideas and concepts with a few sort of real world examples. What you will need to make the experience complete is a mentor to help you understand the nuance that a book just cannot give. The contributions at the end of the book are really valuable and I like how they tie to the overall themes presented in the book. Overall a good read that makes you think what you can do better.

I consider Notes to a Software Team Leader a great introduction into (team) leadership literature. It helps you identify which mode your team is in (most likely the detrimental survival mode, which appears 'normal', because it's so common) and gives practical advice on how to level up your team to the next mode. Once the team is stable, more in depth books, recommended in NTASTL, are helpful for further improvement and to understand the theory behind NTASTL.

Definitely recommend this book. Great set of real world examples, that I could totally relate to. At the end, the author has invited other writers who are experts on this topic - great idea coz that adds so much diversity to the book. Definitely a must read for a budding team lead but also any lead!

Interesting read with some good real world experience. Having read a number of blogs from Roy's website it was good to get some in-depth insight into some real work leadership issues.I would recommend this book to any developer who has been pushed into a leadership no matter what the size of the team.

Well written, easy read. Good content.But, I somehow feel it represents a rather "old-style" leadership. That might be all good, but I found reading Ed Catmull's Creativity Inc. and David Marquet's Turn the Ship Around more inspirational. Go read those instead :-)

I have sculpted for the past 15 or twenty years and bought this book specifically for the page that dealt with plaster piece molds. Unfortunately, piece mold making is a lost art and few books even attempt to describe them, never mind explain how to make them. I'm still not sure how to tackle piece molds of fully articulated figures, but relatively solid pieces, like the portrait head illustrated in the book, would be reasonable to attempt.After receiving the book from Amazon, I was pleasantly surprised by the thoroughness of the book on a host of topics. Trust me, for anyone who is starting out, you can save yourself years of trial and error by referring to this book. In the chapter titled "modeling the figure" Langland explains the importance of building up slowly in "strings" that follow the forms of the muscles and stresses the importance of creating a solid pelvis, rib cage and head making sure that they align properly with the spine. I found myself nodding in agreement at countless points reading the book. It is remarkable how many processes and artistic concerns he manages to thoughtfully and clearly address throughout the book. As an example, Langland describes three methods to mark locations where holes will be drilled through a base to facilitate mounting a bronze sculpture. Now, this sounds like a very straightforward thing to do, but in practice it is a little tricky. Typically, underneath a bronze sculpture, a foundry will drill and tap two or more holes that can receive screws that pass through counter-bored holes in a stone or wood base. How would you locate hole centers in a blank base so that they will match the existing hole pattern in a bronze sculpture?

I have been sculpting only a short time. This book has become a great resource for me to consider having some of my work bronzed. I had no clue as to where to call or what to ask. After finishing this book I was very comfortable calling a local foundry and getting quotes via the formula the author suggested.He also shows how you could, (if you had time and resources), make your own bronze casting at home. Either way the steps are useful for when you are prepping your piece for the foundry. Also included is a nice full-color section on patina's for bronze and the effect each chemical has on the metal.A refreshing component to this book is the authors use of wit and light-hearted look at this art form. It makes the reading very enjoyable and easy.If your an artist that wants to take your work to the next level then I highly recommend this book!

What I like about this book is that Langland is not a dictator in his instruction. He usually offers multiple ways to do a task, and has listed other books for additional ideas. He encourages artists to come up with their own solutions if his options don't exactly fit the bill. The only drawback to the book, is he does not show how to model a head, face, figure, in any kind of detail. For that, you need to look elsewhere. If you want to cast in bronze, or some other plastic material, then I recommend this book.

When I first read the original Sandman, Preludes and Nocturnes, a few months back, I really liked where it was going. I did read that Gaiman thought the story didn't take off, and that the first volume was awkward, but I didn't believe that the series could get significantly better than it already was.After reading the Doll's House, I know now that I was wrong.The Doll's House is weird in all the right ways. Gaiman strings together interesting characters doing bizarre, awesome things in the fallout from the Morpheus's captivity. The main story is great, and the two short story interludes are even better.To get an idea of how good the Doll's House is, you need read no farther than....the summary of the previous volume. Yes, where most books provide the basic plot points of the story (when they provide them at all), Gaiman takes the time to make his previously-on piece to develop characters (Morpheus's brother Destiny, the narrator), set up a recurring joke, and explore themes of the novel. And somewhere in the Sunless lands, Stanley Kubrick nods in approval.Buy Preludes and Nocturnes, read it, and then buy this. You won't regret it.

This was my bedside book for months, but I didn't open it until a few days ago for whatever reason. I really enjoyed it, and the story was more cohesive than the first volume, with the same tangential "mini-stories" that I enjoyed from the first.When dealing with something like dreams.. well, there's a lot you can do with it. A lot of places you can go. Gaiman is essentially only limited to his imagination, and it is clear enough now that he is in no short supply of that. I especially enjoyed the issue about the "deathless man". It reminded me of old fairy tales, similar to those that can be found in something like Howard Pyle's, Twilight Land. And as much as I enjoyed that issue, I was equally disturbed by the "cereal convention". Very disturbed, in fact. As much as these books are Fantasy, they contain horror elements as well; something I was fond of in the Dark Tower.Overall, I really liked it. I am curious to see if the plot line in this volume will affect the story moving forward, or if each will be relatively self contained. Only one way to find out!

First up, all of the 10 volumes of The Sandman novels deserve 5 stars. They are a phenomenal acheivement in not only graphic novels but in storytelling itself. The story is complex and cerebral and the characters so well developed that Sandman is one of my favorite stories period. The novels are intensely violent and often disturbing but everything that happens serves a purpose, and nothing happens by chance or just for the sake of things happening. Something that happens in one volume may become vitally important 3 or 4 volumes later. By the end of the 10th volume everything has come full circle with an appropriate and satisfying end.With regards to Volume 2, it is one of my personal favorites. The storyline concerns Morpheus discovering that while he was imprisoned a few of his creations - dream and nightmares - have escaped to the human plane. He must embark on a quest to retrieve them. At the same time a young woman, Rose Walker, threatens to unknowingly destroy the dream realm and Morpheus must make a decision with regards to her life in order to keep his kingdom intact.As far as the volume's content on the Kindle Fire - I was hesitant to abandon the volumes in print worried that the Kindle Fire might provide a more difficult viewing experience. That hasn't turned out the be the case. The novel is easy to read, you can scan in to specific boxes, and the colors are vibrant.

Like most things Tim Ferris, there is more sizzle than steak here.Since I am not a marketing professional, I found some of the content valuable. Especially the ideas that you need to own a single-word concept (not your brand name) in the consumer's mind, that you can't really change perceptions once formed, and that you need to define a category you are first in if the broad category is ruled by someone else.The book is pre-Internet and somewhat dated as others noticed too. This applies mostly to the corporations and products used as examples. The rules of thumb IMO remain viable. The main reason I did not give more stars is that much of the content is self evident, e.g. law of hype (hype is bad), law of resources (you need money to develop and market), etc.

I have read that this book was a major influence in returning C. S. Lewis from atheism to Christianity. Both Lewis and Chesterton have intellects far superior to my own and this book is no walk in the park to read. I read each page twice before going on to the next. The journey may have been slightly arduous, but it was worth it. It is not big words, needless complexity, or British style and spelling that slowed my comprehension, but big ideas, big concepts that are often difficult to get our heads around and come to a rational justification for our belief systems.Chesterton addresses this problem with statements such as this. “Christianity does appeal to a solid truth outside itself; to something which is in that sense external as well as that things are really things—in this Christianity is at one with common sense; but all religious history shows that this common sense perishes except where there is Christianity to preserve it.”I was also drawn to his words about writing fiction and non-fiction. He says that until historians can explain not only what happened, but what it felt like, there will be more reality in novels than history books. And this, “The life of man is a story; an adventure story; and in our vision the same is true of the story of God.”To nonbelievers, Chesterton has this to say about Christianity, “. . . it would seem that sooner or later even its enemies would learn from their incessant and interminable disappointments not to look for anything so simple as its death. They may continue to war with it, but it will be as they war with nature; as they war with the landscape; as they war with the skies.” He quotes Christ’s words from Matthew: “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.”Chesterton continues, “They will watch for it to stumble; they will watch for it to err; but no longer will they watch for it to end.”

The Everlasting Man integrates history, sociology, theology and philosophy, and seasons it all with wit and humor. It is a serious book all the same, and if you spend some time with it, will help you think more clearly about how we came to be the people we are. For C.S. Lewis it was a first step away from Atheism and toward Christianity. If nothing else, it will poke your assumptions, no matter what they are.I have read and reread this book over many years and there is something fresh, amazing and powerful I discover in it every time. This purchase was a gift to a friend of almost scary intelligence. He sent me a couple of emails early. The first was something he got a laugh out of, the second was how he realized he needed to slow down and dig in more. He hasn't been heard from since. (kidding) It has amazing layers upon layers and satisfies on many levels. Spoiler alert: you will never think the same way about cavemen again.Chesterton is almost certainly the most prolific author of the 20th century and one of its greatest thinkers. If you have the sand to give it a try I recommend starting with the Audible/Kindle version, which is well narrated.

Chesterton was popular in my high school decades ago for his Father Brown mysteries, and having read them then, and much of his friend C. .S. Lewis, decided to read the book that converted Lewis to Catholicism. Chesterton, like many a philosopher or journalist of his time, is not a quick or easy read for the twenty-first century reader. His prose may seem turgid and his allusions unfamiliar at times, but with flawless grammar and rock-solid reasoning, the persistent reader is rewarded with a brilliant long view of God's relationship with his earthly creation as it has evolved along with the evolution of his most sentient creatures. Chesterton's writing is well worth the effort for anyone aspiring to understand the scholarly works that have influenced the great thinkers and statesmen of our own time, and a must-read for any atheist or agnostic who claims to have an open mind. But read him slowly, patiently, and look up the unfamiliar words and references to get an understanding of his issues from the human side. Then read C. S. Lewis's Mere Christianity for a better understanding of God's point of view.

For the average layman, this book may be a bit boring. But for those truly trying to understand how people like Chesterton and Lewis came to faith, read this book. I would easily put it at the top 15 books every Christian should read in their lifetime. Lewis mentioned that this book had a significant impact to his conversion to Christianity from atheism. That alone is worth the read.

What a refreshing reminder of the glory that is man. Chesterton reminds us that for all the similarities between man and the other animals, the gulf between us is even greater. In the same way he then shows us that for all the superficial similarities between ancient and other religions and Christianity, the gulf is even greater. He makes us see that the most important parts really are the only parts that matter. I have been forever liberated from superficial sophistry that focuses only on the superficial for the sole purpose of obscuring the only things that matter. Thank you, G.K. What a great book.

But what an enjoyable task it is. It is all too easy to draw the parallels between Chesterton and Lewis, but here we go. Both make you pay attention to every word and every line to grasp the concepts they introduce and follow the arguments they string together. But both have the skill of a poet in thrilling you as you go.Chesterton takes on the task of counteracting popular opinion that man is just another animal and that Christianity is just another religion. He does so with both wit and wisdom. He challenges the assumptions of many learned thinkers by turning their arguments on their heads and showing how much better they then represent reality.Highly recommended for those interested in apologetics as well as anyone investigating Christianity. Chesterton provides a convincing case for orthodox Christianity with humor, intelligence, and beauty.

I've been teaching writing in college and graduate school for about 15 years, including two years in a writing department. I know that my University's teaching center recommends this book, so I decided to take a look at it. Bean helped me step back and take a fresh look at how to connect my writing assignments with the thinking that I want my students to do. After reading this book, I have been experimenting this semester with having the students do more thinking exercises before they actually write their papers.In emphasizing the value of thinking before writing, I have shared with several of my students the section in chapter 2 about the French concept of brouillon ("something deliberately scrambled, something placed in disorder, something that must be wrestled into form").This thought-provoking book should prompt all professors to review their methods for provoking thought....

I’ve read at least 15 highly regarded books on college teaching. This one is significantly better than all the rest of them.Each chapter helped me understand why certain things are difficult for students and offered effective solutions that have been fairly easy to implement.Here are a few things I’ve learned from this book that have made a very meaningful difference in my teaching:* why students don’t do the reading and how to help them learn to read difficult texts* why frequent, short, informal writing helps students learn better and specific ideas for implementing it with little to no effort on my part* why 2 or 3 short papers, staggered throughout the semester, is WAY better than a longer paper due at the end of the semester* Why you should give students the opportunity to revise their paper (to address your written feedback) for a higher grade* how to give written feedback on student papers that students will actually read and learn from.As you might have guessed, most of this involves writing. I learned from this book two really valuable things about teaching with writing. First, adding written assignments (even just short, informal ones) to your arsenal of teaching pedagogies is a very effective way to help them learn content.Second, a year of freshman comp is simply not enough writing instruction for most students, and learning how to write well in college is extremely important. Therefore, it is really every professor’s responsibility to help students improve their writing skills.This book shows us why and how to do that, without adding much to our already too high workload.Are you a department chair? Buy a copy for each faculty member in your department. Have a monthly lunch at which you discuss 2 chapters from this book. This will improve the quality of teaching in your department.

Using the ideas in this book transformed my classroom. I teach adults in a vocational program. Most have little time for homework, but I started assigning weekly written assignments following the suggestions. Bingo! Students became more active in class and were prepared for discussions. While they didn't enjoy the papers, they all felt the papers were extremely valuable in their learning. I continue to refer to this book when planning a class or assignment. It's not a one-time read although you could easily read it straight through.

This is the best single book out there on teaching writing and critical thinking -- and the second edition is a significant revision, expansion, and updating of the first, without losing the balance of clearly articulated principles and multiple practical examples of the first edition.If you love your current first edition, you should at least borrow a copy of the second from your library or teaching center to see the expanded sections on teaching students to write in multiple genres, supporting undergraduate researchers, and anchoring writing in particular disciplinary contexts. This is not a chintzy "I updated a few references and added some new stories" second edition: every chapter is rewritten to better prepare teachers for writing and thinking instruction in classes across the disciplines.I use this book as a cornerstone of my composition pedagogy course, recommend it to all my colleagues, and always find something useful when I re-read it myself.

I was sceptical but had to read this for a workshop. The book converted me completely. Since then I've bought it for colleagues, gone back to it many times, and used it to change the way I teach--especially the way I teach writing. Best of all, it's evidence-based but flexible; it gives more than one side of an issue. (E.g., it gives the arguments and evidence both for and against essay exams.) It gives lots of examples and suggests many ways of doing things (e.g., LOTS of kinds of rubrics, and the strengths and weaknesses of each). I keep going back to this book, though I wish I had more time to use it.

Are you an instructor? If you answered "yes" to that question, then you must buy this book. Even if your expertise is not in composition or English, this will help you craft new assignments or activities to help your students do some critical thinking.

Dr. Bean has some terrific ideas for meaningful teaching. This book is worth every penny. Ideas about how to help students learn to think critically through writing and reading are enriching for every educator.

Very easy to read and apply ideas. I was hoping more in the beginning on what critical thinking entails (i.e. Facets of rhetorical problem solving), but this is still a good book to read before implementing any composition course pedagogy.
