I knew Meredith Holley's book would be good. I first encountered her online, on a book website, and her various book reviews/reports/responses/reactions immediately became among my favorites. She would take these complex, literary, dense, difficult books and relate them to understandable analogies or personal stories that led me to seek out the same books in hopes of the same results. After a few attempts, I realized that sometimes what I desired to read were HER words, not necessarily the books she wrote about.In a medium where one's thoughts expressed through typed words were the means of connection, not the physical appearance or sometimes-distraction of voices, many of us ended up sharing more of ourselves than we normally would if we'd met in person first. It was there that a number of us compared stories and I was shocked at how common stalking and harassment was as an experience for women. All of us! To varying degrees and severity, but 100%. It was also clear that most of us had shrugged it off but these experiences still impacted our reactions and thoughts.This book. It's like Meredith read the stories of our lives and then related them to understandable analogies and her own experience, hah. It may not be that we want to examine our lives, but she can help re-frame certain parts of it. There was a time when I was frightened, and googling for a course of action, and discouraged by the lack of recourse, and downgrading my experiences since it could've all been so much worse, and I wish I could've had a simple explanation or a guide through those days. She gives an orderly, useful (!) approach and also offers to help directly.I haven't been in contact since those halcyon-ish book website days, so I'm saddened to learn she's writing firsthand about Career Defense. I'm glad she's sharing it, and turning it all into tools for the rest of us. I do remember that quality about her, the curious listening and gentle questions to learn more about the other, and in the same process letting us learn about ourselves. She's more than a fantastic human being - she's spreading it to help us be more fantastic ourselves.

About the Author

Theresa (Terry) W. Fossum is the Vice President for Research and Strategic Initiatives and a Professor of Veterinary Surgery at Midwestern University in Glendale, AZ. She was appointed as a special assistant to the Secretary of Energy in October 2017 to assist the Department of Energy in developing its STEM and Workforce Initiatives. Dr. Fossum graduated from Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1982. After completing an internship at Santa Cruz Veterinary Hospital the following year, she went on to do a surgery residency and Master’s degree at the Ohio State University. She received board certification in Surgery (ACVS) in 1987 and joined the faculty at Texas A&M University (TAMU) later that year, where she eventually held an Endowed Chair in Veterinary Surgery. In 1992, she completed a PhD in Veterinary Microbiology. Dr. Fossum is a world renowned veterinary surgeon and was the founder and served as the Clinical Director of the Michael E. DeBakey Institute at TAMU. She has presented thousands of hours of continuing education in the US and worldwide and in 2007 was named “Continuing Education Presenter of the Year” at the Western Veterinary Conference. Additionally, she has mentored numerous surgery residents and graduate students throughout her career. Dr. Fossum is a previous recipient of the Wiley Distinguished Professor of Veterinary Medicine Award and the Carl J. Norden Distinguished Teacher Award at Texas A&M University. Dr. Fossum has authored or co-authored over 100 manuscripts in refereed journals. In 2004, she received the Texas Society for Biomedical Research Award in recognition and appreciation for her many years of dedicated service to the science, research and medical communities in the State of Texas. She is a Distinguished Alumnus at The Ohio State University and received the Texas A&M University System “Innovator of the Year Award”. She currently serves on the Board of Directors at WVC and is a Trustee of the American Veterinary Medical Association.

I travelled to Bhutan just after the release of this guide. Lucky me! This being so, all the practical information and advice was fresh and reliable, up to date,well organised and structured, and I used the guide a lot!Although most people travel to Bhutan in small-group locally-organised tours, it is possible to visit the country independently -a legal permit is necessary and previous lengthy detailed application is needed- or semi-dependently by telling the local travel agent the places you want to go and visit and stay. This being the case, I consider the guide a good tool for all sort of travellers, not just the majority using guided tours.Bhutan History is complex, and historical facts, myth and religion mix in ways that are difficult to separate at times. The authors make a terrific job at condensing and distilling it for the foreign reader in ways that are understandable and entertaining, and surprisingly unbiased at times (read for example the pages devoted to English interventionism).I also loved the approach to Buthanese Buddhist customs and ways of living, and all the info about Buddhism in Bhutan (Mahayana Buddhism is so complicate!) which are very important to put into practice to show respect and get respect back from the locals, and to understand what is going on in a country that breathes Buddhism. I also found the book very good to find out on matters that some of the guides found embarrassing or inappropriate to comment upon or reply to because they relate to "odd" practices re monk behaviour, etc., so this book will tell you what some local guides won't.The Kindle edition is truly useful, easy to carry around, with linked cross-references that make the book easy to move back and forth. My only complain is about the design with the use of left justification instead of complete justification, like so very 20th century!, which makes the book look amateurish and unpolished.The selection of photographs is terrific.

Excellent information on Bhutan and very necessary if you are going to travel there. There is little accurate information on this lost kingdom, I call 'Shangra-la' after visiting there. I can't wait to go back.

The maps in this guide are seriously lacking. They tell you about all these great places to visit but good luck actually finding most of them on the maps provided.

This was a great guide while I was in Bhutan - but the Kindle version is better (and I ended up buying that as well) as you can search when you come across the name of a monastery as needed - and Bhutan has a LOT of monasteries. The paper version is much more difficult to search.

Useful as Lonely Planet Guides always are. Given the requirement that visitors can only enter Bhutan via a registered tour group, more explanation of the options would be useful.

Comprehensive, accurate, a great travel companion.....lots of anecdotes and history....could use more detail on eastern Bhutan as more and More of us are going there.....

A fascinating look at ancient and modern biblical scholarship. It leads us through the Hebrew Bible/ Old Testament and reports on interpretations as well as results of historical, archaeological, and linguistic research into its stories. This is given by a man who categorizes himself as an Orthodox Jew. I could imagine he is not entirely popular in that camp. He will certainly not have friends in literalist Christian circles.The book explores origin, historicity, and interpretations of the familiar stories and words. Linguistics and archaeology have made significant contributions, but many important questions seem not to have been answered once and for all. Maybe they never will. Questions like 'who wrote these texts?' have been answered in too many different ways to leave us with a clear conclusion. We don't know for sure, if key persons like Abraham, Moses, Joshua, or even David really existed, or if they are mere giants of mythology. Or if anything like the exodus happened. Or the conquering of Canaan by an invading Israel. Or if the alleged wisdom of King Solomon has a base in truth. (Mustn't he rather have been quite a loser, in view of the breaking up of his kingdom as soon as he was gone?)What about the beginnings of monolatry and monotheism? No definite answers.Which child did Isaiah's prophecy, about the child that will be born, that Christmas lore likes to emphasize, refer to, actually? And more of the kind.I recommend this book if you want to update yourself on the various disputes about biblical interpretation.How does the author reconcile the findings, that he reports here, with his personal religious attitude? He doesn't. '...modern biblical scholarship and traditional Judaism are and must always remain completely irreconcilable.'In the last chapter, the author admits to his personal contradiction: his religious self considers modern Bible research irrelevant. A split mind.My headline is a quote from page 411. The chapter deals with the kingless period of Israel. Whether the author meant to comment on modern politics in Israel or the US is not clear to me.

This book is written in order to explore two broad themes: how did faithful Jews and Christians read the Bible in the centuries leading up to the beginnings of modern archaeology and textual criticism; and how has the work of these technical experts put a new spin on the texts and challenged what we believed? Kugel does not try to reconcile the two. But if you would like a clearly written, concise explanation of the differences between those two camps, this book does a bang-up job.

A better title for the book would be "How to Read the Old Testament." The book only covers the Old Testament and is very informative. A fascinating study of the Old Testament of the Bible, which is considered the books for the Jewish religion, and a preface for the Christian religion. This is a great book and I am glad that I took the opportunity to buy and read this book. The author writes in a very understandable book about a difficult subject. Highly recommended to anyone who wants to know and understand the Jewish religion and what influenced the Christian religion. One of the very few books that I consider worth rereading over and over again.

What a refreshing and invaluable book! Kugel is a magnificent explicator who succeeds in making the historical and religious stew of the "Old Testament" come alive in all its complexity. Only quibble is with the publisher (Free Press, a division of Simon and Schuster): my edition of the book (2007 paperback) is lacking a whole "signature" of pages, from pp. 263 through 294. Be sure to check that your copy includes those pages.

There's a phenomenon at large, prestigious colleges and universities that I think it peculiar to that kind of institution (although my experience of others is limited, and I can't be sure). I call it "Rock Star Professors." They are people whose lectures are performances in the best sense of the word. These professors are enlightening, amusing, and charismatic and a great many students sign up for their classes even if they don't have any interest in the subject matter.James L. Kugel, now at Bar Ilan University in Israel, was just such a Rock Star Professor during the over 20 years he taught at Harvard. His introduction to the Bible course regularly drew 900 students, many of them not particularly interested in religion. When the enrollment for his course surpassed the similarly popular introductory economics course taught by John Kenneth Galbraith, the headline in the Harvard Crimson read "God Beats Mammon."I've never had the opportunity to hear Kugel lecture, but if his new book How to Read the Bible is representative of his work, he is certainly engaging, enlightening and charismatic in print, as well. As it happens the subject matter is of great interest to me, but it's also something that can be written in a deadly dull style and Kugel completely avoids that.His task in this book is to look at the Hebrew Bible (in English translation) from two distinct points of view: that of the people he calls the "ancient interpreters" (both Christian and Jewish) and that of modern biblical scholarship (incorporating linguistic, archaeological, and historical findings into our understanding). He begins by saying that, as an Orthodox Jew, the findings of modern scholarship that show that the Bible was written by a variety of people at a variety of times and that some of the "historical" sections could not represent actual history were very disturbing to him. He had some misgivings and indecision about entering into academic biblical scholarship as his life work. OTOH, Kugel expounds, he didn't feel he could just ignore what others had found out and he needed to come to some sort of modus vivendi that allowed him to continue to live an observant life and accept this information. From the totally opposite point of view, he points out that an understanding of how the Bible has been interpreted through history in both Jewish and Christian views is essential to understanding much of Western literature, art, and culture, so it's insufficient to just acquaint oneself with modern scholarship.So Kugel compares and contrasts the two approaches, and does so with the genius of a great storyteller and showman. The Bible is - among other things - a collection of great stories and he tells them with aplomb and with an appreciation for the contrast between the traditional and scholarly views. Was the story of Adam and Eve one of the Fall of Man, as traditionally interpreted, or an etiological tale about the movement from hunter/gatherer society to a more agrarian culture, as archaeological and linguistic evidence suggests? Why are there three different "wife/sister" stories in the Bible, where a patriarch tries to pass his wife off as his sister? Who wrote the Psalms and what was their original purpose? Was David king of a great nation, protege of King Saul, and a flawed human being in his private life, or an upstart who launched a military coup and took over a small chiefdom? Did he even exist? Kugel expounds on all these questions with insight, skill, and frequent laugh-out-loud humor.How to Read the Bible is a fascinating book and chock full of Fun Facts to Know and Tell. The book is well written, divides the subject into meaningful chapters, and does a good job of presenting fundamental demographic concepts. There are a few places where the wording is a bit less than exact concerning some demographic technicalities, but this will do no real damage. In particular, I was happy to see good references to the demographic literature at the right places. All in all, this is an excellent introduction and overview of the intersection of demography and archaeology that does justice to both subjects.

I am an Electrical Engineer, not an Economist. My depth of knowledge ends with “ decreasing marginal utility”. After finishing this book (600+ pages) I understand the Trade issues on the nightly news a little better. I never considered Trade Politics as an interesting subject but was incorrect in that assumption. The author spent a great deal of time explaining and detailing trade history basically beginning with the founding of our country. This is especially interesting if you've read the history of Washington, Jefferson, Adams, Hamilton or any of the Founding Fathers. He then takes us thru the depression with Roosevelt and up to the present with Trump. After reading this book, with the Trade perspective, I now feel like I know "The rest of the Story".

This is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the moment of history we're living in right now. It's not just about trade and tariffs, but really all of U.S. history, in times of war and peace. It's sweeping, from Adam Smith and Alexander Hamilton through Steve Bannon and Donald Trump. Very interesting with funny anecdotes from history and from the author's own experience as a leader on these issues.

The author does a reasonably thorough job of detailing our countries history of trade. Our early leaders were divided; the south wanted little or no tariffs or duties but the north used tariffs to protect our growing industrial base. Our nation’s history has been formed by a this debate. In the author’s introduction he focuses on Adam Smith’s Wealth of Nations. Published in 1776 Smith’s work extols the virtues of free trade wherein all of society benefits when every producer is free to maximize their own individual economic freedom. The author included in his introduction the four situations Smith offers where government and industry should cooperate in the form of protection: protect an industry needed for national defense, impose a tax on a foreign import when a domestic tax is imposed upon a similar product of the home industry, impose a tariff on foreign imports in response to the competition, and finally trade restrictions should be removed gradually to allow fledgling enterprises to keep pace.What fascinates me is that all four of Adam Smith’s situations to support the public good are used today by president Trump to justify his negotiations with global trading partners for fair trade. The author dislikes Trump and makes no effort to disguise that fact. I suggest the reader reread pages 18 and 19 again before reading the conclusion. Like me, I suspect the reader will easily identify the inconsistency.

The author who is allegedly expert enough to author a book on American Trade Politics, ignores the significant improvement in the US economy since Donald Trump has been President. He is more of a left wing ideologue than an economist . He is very biased against Trump. He criticizes Trump's effort's to reduce the trade deficits the US has with other nations especially China. He also ignores the economic advantages that would accrue to the US if there was control of our southern border. No one criticizes Mexico or any other country which controls who enters their country. But the author who clearly lets his hostility to Trump interfere with economic logic is against adequate border control. He criticizes any effort by Trump to reduce trade deficits with Mexico or other countries which have surpluses in trade with US. Don't waste your money. He ignores the lowest unemployment rates for minorities since statistics have been compiled for these groups and the lowest overall unemployment rate in 40 years. You can hear similar nonsense for free on MSNBC and CNN.

This book reads like a novel but is a well documented history of our nation’s trade policies. Mr. Johnson hasn’t just put facts together he has told a fascinating story. Never dull.

Although an avid reader, this is my first review of a book. I felt compelled, however, to recommend this history of protectionism and free trade policy.It covers the United States from it’s founding to the present day. At the timing of this review, these issues have received considerable headlines. “The Wealth of a Nation” provided me with a framework for understanding the long debated issues of international trade between sovereign nations. The book is readable and my hope is that it reaches a larger audience yearning for effective government within an increasingly connected world.
