Re-reading this book reminded me of how much it influenced fantasy fiction going forward. Long before Hogwarts, Le Guin gave us the wizarding school of Roke. This was always my favorite part of the story. The novel's protagonist, Ged, becomes a student at Roke under the tutelage of nine master wizards, all of whom may have helped inspire, at least in a faint sense, the professors of Harry Potter's school of wizardry and witchcraft. But that is where the similarities end.Ged is a flawed hero. Fueled by a rivalry with a fellow student, Ged's pride leads him to show off his power by practicing dark and forbidden magic. He ends up unleashing a shadow, and Ged's quest to ultimately hunt down this demon drives the rest of the novel. In this sense, the story is deeply personal. Even though it covers years of Ged's life, there is nothing epic about this tale. The story concerns Ged, and Ged alone.In 1968, this story would have seemed vastly different than Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" or the sword and sorcery tales of Poul Anderson and Michael Moorcock. For one, there is nothing European about Earthsea. Rather, the people of its archipelago appear more like one might imagine hailing off the coasts of Africa, India, or Asia. Also, there's nary a sword to be found in "A Wizard of Earthsea." Instead, it's all about wizards, and wizards carry staves.A story about wizards is naturally all about magic, and Le Guin creates one of the most interesting magic systems ever made, all based on the true name of things. A wizard who knows a thing's true name has power over it, and Le Guin harkens back to that theme throughout her tale. Reading it, I can't help but think it inspired modern fantasy like "The Name of the Wind," which employs a similar magic system.Despite a few bouts of lengthy exposition, and conflict that waxes and wanes maybe more than it should, I was drawn into a story as if I was reading it for the first time. I wish it had not taken news of Le Guin's passing remind me of these tales, but I'm fortunate it did. "A Wizard of Earthsea" is a true classic, unique in its day and far ahead of its time. For anyone, particularly those who want to explore one of the roots from which modern fantasy was born, I highly recommend it.

I did not know when I started reading that the Earthsea books were written for teenagers. Although the language was paired down, streamlined, the prose did not feel dumbed-down as many YA novels can. It simply moved, effortlessly, forward carrying me along the rise and fall of the story like Ged’s magewind driven boat over the open sea.I’m disappointed only in myself for waiting so long to read this swift, engaging book.Le Guin’s world building is nearly as deep as Tolkien’s and leaves the reader wanting to know so much more about Earthsea and its histories, cultures and dragons. I look forward to continuing my journey into this compelling, mysterious world.

When I decided to read only books written by female authors in 2017, there was only one name that I knew HAD to be on the list: Ursula K. Le Guin. I had never read any of her work, having only recently been introduced to her via a YouTube video in which she spoke about the lack of people of color in works of fantasy. I had never stopped to ponder this issue before, so her conversation inflicted a little self-reflection in me as well as piqued my interest in her work.The book follows the young boy, Ged, also known as Sparrowhawk. Ged has all the qualities you’d wish in a fantasy lead: he is powerful and brave and good. But he’s also young, at times immature, brash, arrogant, and reckless.This recklessness inadvertently causes Ged to unleash an evil upon the world, and in true fantasy fashion, he has to be the one to vanquish the evil and make things right again.There’s not a ton of action in the book. The wizarding school is not as elaborately imagined as that in Harry Potter (though it predates that series by decades), but is interesting nonetheless. What the book does have is strong character growth, and a philosophical edge not usually present in fantasy. It will make you think as well as feel.I could not fault the writing, but as the book approached its 50th anniversary, it does feel mildly dated. Still, if you want a fantasy that is more introspective than action packed, this is a good choice, and an interesting opening to the series. I will be picking up the second novel to see how it unfolds.4 out of 5 stars

After seeing this series on all the top fantasy lists I decided to give it a read. Just seems like a mediocre book to me. I got through it expecting a climax or revelation. *Spoiler alert* main character comes from a poor village, starts learning magic. Goes to a prestigious magic school. Then starts killing dragons with 0 consequences and chases his shadow for a while then hugs it. That's the whole story right there.

This book is full of information necessary to understand where International Adoption is today. It's well researched and mapped out. However the main purpose of the book is to explain their theory on paying birth parents during the adoption process.This seems backwards to me, the current system of International Adoption is already incredibly corrupt due to monetary greed and, knowing that, they still want to put more money into it? We already have birth mothers, countries and organizations selling children solely for monetary gain. I agree these countries and families may need help but is encouraging them to sell their children really the answer? No child should ever be attached to a price tag. Is it so inconceivable to propose we get rid of monetary compensation all together? (I would actually really like someone to answer this question.)Four stars for the information, minus a star for promoting the selling of human beings.

this book blends the two well. I heard the authors speak at a recent adoptive families conference and bought the book out of curiosity. I must say they present their theory well in this engaging and accessible book. The book isn't dry and technical; the authors add enough real life examples to make it readable for the layperson. The authors speak from the heart as well as the head. This is a good read for anyone open to the idea of a different way to improve the life of kids AND the two sets of parents.

Definitely pro-international Adoption, yet surprisingly balanced. Also, very readable and not too academic for what seems to be a well-researched book. They propose something that seems audacious to solve the main problems in international adoption, but they’ve pretty much convinced me by the end. What’s weird is that what seems unthinkable for worldwide adoption of kids, is what is the norm in the US and accepted. That is, open adoption and some payment of birth moms allowed, though not encouraged. Pretty cool.

I had the pleasure of hearing Mark and Irene speak at a recent conference. Their presentation style is very similar to the style of their book- engaging, down to earth, a bit humorous, and backed by lots of data.As I listened to their presentation I found myself intrigued by their proposal, but not convinced. After reading their book on the subject I am still not sure I'm convinced that their idea would work, but it sure seems like it's worth a try. They definitely make a good case for their argument and I can see a point where I would come around to their way of thinking, especially if their method has some initial success. Their book definitely made clear that what's happening now is not working, and is preventing children who need homes and families who want children from coming together, for merely political reasons. I also enjoyed the stories about Isata that were interspersed through the book.I recommend this book to anyone interested in international adoption, and especially for those who have or who are considering adopting a child from overseas.

Evidence based and very thorough. An interesting read.

I was lucky enough to use this textbook in multiple classes. This is not only a huge benefit for students looking to save on books - but the cohesive nature of the text & notation connects concepts from various courses (probability theory; stochastic calculus; financial math) quite easily. For example, you may not get the same experience if you learned stochastic calculus and financial mathematics from two different textbooks.The authors did a great job covering pricing from various user levels (discrete; continuous; single asset; multi asset; path-dependent; etc) as well as all the math behind it (it -really- is quite comprehensive.) The problem sets are challenging enough to engage students/users but I found that the the sections that preceded the questions outlined clear (& often multiple) methods on solving similar problems. I would highly recommend this book to anyone with interest in quantitative finance, whether academically or professionally.

Bought this book early in my degree to use for 2 courses in financial math. I am just finishing up a course in Intro to Stochastic Calculus and this book was very very useful. I've tried to read through other books on Stochastic Calculus and they just seem to lack worked examples, proofs, and practice problems (mostly because I think the course is usually taught at a graduate level typically). But the authors clearly saw an opportunity and created a great book. I look forward to using it in future courses.And a note for future students: this is not an easy topic and requires a lot of work. I read and re-read sections as I make my own notes directly from the text. You cannot give a bad review if you've simply read sections once over quickly and don't practice the content

At over 800 pages, you can consider this a mathematical finance bible of sorts! With the utmost rigour, Campolieti demonstrates his specialized knowledge in the field of Mathematical Finance—having earned his PhD in 1989 and taught Mathematical Finance for over two decades, Campolieti draws on his deep well of knowledge and experience to present otherwise obscure and technical results in an easy to digest manner. The authors use their mathematical prowess to bring a fresh and innovative approach to the concepts of Mathematical Finance—bringing mathematical rigour and intuition into his explanations and proofs.Do not listen to reviews that complain about the absence of a Student Solution Manual. Indeed, the problem sets are difficult. However, I have been informed that the authors are in the process of making the solutions manual available to the public. In many ways, the solutions manual will blow you away even more than the textbook, as the solutions are treated with extreme care and precision—providing you with explicit and step-by-step guides to the illuminating questions provided.This is a must-have for anyone who is serious about studying mathematical finance.

Firstly, I was an undergraduate student taught by these two professors so I bought this as a reference book to replace my class notes.Do note that I have not read everything from this book as this book is (much) bigger than Shreve's.-> Audience:This book is mainly for those pursuing the financial mathematics industry (as a student or as someone switching into the field). Financial mathematics mainly deals with options pricing and financial risk management.-> Mathematics Background & Chapters:For this book in particular the more mathematics,statistics (and maybe programming) one knows the better it is for self-study. Knowing real analysis can definitely help as some of the later chapters mention Borel sets, measure, Radon-Nikodym Derviative, etc.The first chapter deals with Time Value of Money, Annuities and Bonds and the second chapter is an introduction to pricing financial securities and some topics in portfolio theory. These first two chapters assume a background in calculus, a introductory probability and statistics and intro linear algebra.The later chapters assume the reader has knowledge in probability theory and there is a self-contained section on Stochastic Calculus which is the foundation for options pricing and risk management. Chapters also include the Binomial Asset Pricing Model (like in Shreve's Vol. 1) and Continuous Time Pricing Models (like in Shreve Vol. II). After the pricing models, there are sections dealing with Interest Rate models, Black-Scholes theory, options pricing, Change of Measure. The background assumed is probability theory, some real analysis and PDEs.There is one chapter which I think is a bit difficult. The chapter deals with the "Essentials of Probability Theory" which involves probability theory, real analysis, Borel sets and some Lebesgue integration ideas. This section is probably more suited for the financial mathematics researcher.In the last section of the book, there is a self-contained section on Monte Carlo Methods and Numerical methods for pricing and hedging financial securities. This section is nice for those interested in applying the theory (from earlier chapters) to practice.-> Book Formatting:I think the authors do a good job with having a section for list of notations with their meanings, a list of examples used, and some expectation indentities. There are no answers in the back of the book but the detailed and worked out examples are pretty good in the sense that they provide ideas and perspectives on solving questions and proofs.Similar to Shreve's Stochastic Calculus for Finance book, some proofs are omitted since they require some higher level mathematics.The self-contained Stochastic Calculus section was well done in my opinion. It was more detailed the Shreve's Vol II book. The examples in using Ito's Formula and solving SDEs was helpful.This book covered at least two or three courses in my Financial Mathematics undergrad under these guys. The value you get from this book is pretty darn good. I give this a book a 5 since it is a good reference and from my onw bias too. (If I was not biased, I might have given a 4.)I thought I'd give this review to give those an idea what this book is about as I highly disagreed with the one other review.

I was assigned this book for several fourth year undergraduate level courses. The text contains an advanced treatment of the type of mathematics needs for options pricing, including stochastic calculus and brownian motion.Ultimately, I have yet to find another text that covers this breadth on the topic, with this level of complexity. The book is well-written and self-contained. For any upper division mathematics student, this would be an excellent choice for studying financial mathematics.

The first 3 stories were ok reads, lots of hot and heavy sex. The stories moved fast sometimes was a little confusing who was talking but guess that's why they are short stories. the last one Lure by the billionaire needed a lot of help, I don't think it should have been in the box set cause it was so short and story line so fast it really didn't make sense.I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book and am giving an honest review.

This is a great collection of stories with a lot of hot chemistry and steamy scenes, add excitement and emotional situations and then add intrigue and drama and you have an idea what to expect. I liked how well the story lines came together with the characters. Each story is different and has different situations but all have Alpha males and the women they eventually love/mate with.I read an ARC of this collectionan am voluntarily writing this review.

This starts off fast and hot with a menage, and then it turns into turf wars and conflicts. I enjoyed reading the bike scene with grandma watching. Lol. I liked the connection between the bears and Selena and how protective of their triad and the lengths they went to to make things work. Drama, violence, smexy times with passion to a hfn ending. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book and am giving an honest review.

Short stories that jumps into a short time in the caracters lives. I liked that the stories are straight to the point with some steamy scenes, a little crude behavior and a thouch of violence. I like biker and shifter stories and although these were shorter and less detailed stories than I normally read, I did enjoy them. The last story was a little less well written than the other stories though, I felt it was a little rushed and could have been cleaned up a little in its structure, but all in all I did appreciate these short stories.

This was a great selection of book which is exactly what I have come to enjoy from the author, the shifter action was great and the their female was more than able to keep them in line and also to give them the love and the care they need in their lives, she is far stronger than any give her credit for however her shifters will ensure she is cared for and loved and wants for nothing.

I loved that this story contained two of my favorite categories of books shifters and bikers! The stories are well written, action packed with alphas that will have you reading about them over again. My favorites were Sitting Pretty and Bear Protectors but all of them are well worth reading. I voluntarily agreed to receive an Arc of this book for an honest review.

This was a hot and steamy read. There were a few ménage stories which was good. There was more than enough heat to make each of the novels an enjoyable read.My only wish was that there was a little more of an introduction to the characters it felt a little rushed in some places, but the story line was very fast paced so it holds true to the story line.

Great stories with a lot of excitement, emotional situations, intrigue, drama and so much more. Loved how well the story lines meshed with the characters. Different situations in each one with Alpha males and the women they eventually mate with. Highly recommended. I voluntarily review a copy.

While I have not yet used any of the recipes, the book is clearly written, includes nutritional information, and many of the recipes sound delicious. There are no photos. My biggest complaint about this book is that it says nothing about the size of slow cooker for which the recipes are designed. While I understand these are recipes for just two people, it would be nice if the recipes stated, “designed for 3 qt cooker” or “designed for 4 qt cooker” or whatever. My understanding is that a slow cooker works best when it is about 3/4 full and cooking can be affected if the cooker is not filled to that point. Stating the size of slow cooker used for the recipe testing would be a nice addition to this otherwise nicely written book.

This cookbook is full of information about "clean" eating also. Lots of slow cooker recipes call for cream of something soup and other unhealthy ingredients. Not so here.If you are cooking for more than two, these recipes can be doubled. My favorite slow cooker cookbook!!!

This slow cooker cookbook has included 250 cooking recipes content. All step-wise here this book. I really love this book contains. All helpful to us. Delicious recipes make easily and also quickly from this guidebook. Their meal plans really I am satisfied. So finally I prescribe this book. Overall excellent !!

My wife read this a few years ago and then again for class this past spring and she loved it all over again. She would recommend it to others who enjoy European art history that was saved by the Monuments Men and women from World War II. This book focuses more on Italy then the actual Monuments Men book and it co-insides with Saving Italy.

I ordered three different books about stolen artwork/jewels from Amazon at one time. I began with the Venus Fixers, moved on to Chasing Aphrodite and ended with Flawless. The Venus Fixers was the least enjoyable of the three.I am familiar with Italian Rennaisance art, with Florence, Rome and Sienna but still felt bogged down in all the minutae. The book had no central focus to drive the narrative - I understand that there were lots of different players involved who helped save the artwork of Italy... but the book never felt exciting - that we were a first hand witness to critical events - that the Venus Fixers raced to rescue the artistic jewels of Italy.The book was interesting, just not engrossing. I was hoping that a story of Allied forces saving entire cities and their monuments and artwork from destruction would be thrilling - unfortunately, the Venus Fixers doesn't come close to that. It's more a laundry list of place names, beauracratic names and artwork. Most times when a famous piece of artwork was listed, there was no context for it. I always wanted to ask: why is that piece of art or that monument important?Read the book for its detail, but don't expect it to be a page-turner.

A very interesting account of the small band of remarkable men who tried to protect and stabilize the the monuments and art treasures of Italy as the Allies advanced. It is also an interesting account of the Italian front and the two years that it took to push the Germans out of Italy. For anyone familiar with Italy and its art, it is intriguing ti understand how close the world came to losing it. And it is a real tribute to the Americans and the British who understood how precious a heritage it is and how important it was to preserve it. Subsequent armies have not devoted time and expense and energy to preserving the treasures of other invaded countries. Definitely worth reading.

When I picked up the book, I initially had the impression that this will develop into a telephone directory type of book: too many names, too many details. But by the time I read the first 100 pages I was hooked.Why: because it brought into focus, even to one like me, who lived during WWII in Europe, and lived under bombs and survived them, how little we know, how "nothing" really we know about the manner in which so many masterpieces we admire matter-of-factly at the Uffizi, Accademia, the Archaeological Museum in Napoli, the cathedrals which we visit and admire everywhere in Italy, the bridges, the Palazzi, etc., how all these were saved by only a small number of Allied officers and by the work of most of the 50 Italian superintendents who were entrusted with these treasures, alas! too late in some cases, when the Allied forces landing in Italy in 1943.Much of the book concentrates on Tuscany and on Florence, but there is plenty about the South and the North of Italy.Personally, I will never look in the same way at Boticelli's Primavera, I will never walk along the Lungarno in Florence without imagining palazzi destroyed, bridges over the Arno annihilated, the Palazzo Pitti serving as shelter for 6000 people while the bridges and palazzi of the Arno were being blasted, 6000 people living in the Pitti in the midst of the art treasures, cooking, sleeping, worrying, waiting the war out. Among them Carlo Levi, and the Guicciardinis of the street with the same name whose palazzo on the Lungarno was mined and blasted, so many others without famous names. How the destruction was observed with great risk to life by Italian art and monuments public officers from the relative shelter of the Corridoio Vasariano, which remained almost undamaged due to Hitler fixation over the Ponte Vecchio, the only Florence bridge not to be blasted by the retreating German army.There is much about masterpieces gone forever: the bombed Camposanto in Pisa (later partially restored), the 50 or more churches of Genoa, the Ovetari Chapel in Padua and with it the Mantegna frescoes, the Ponte di Mezzo of Verona which was considered the oldest Roman bridge in Italy. So many which we will never see!This book tells us what was saved, and how, and by whom. And what was lost.Personally, thanks to this book, I will never again enter any of these museums and admire these monuments thinking that they have been there forever and forever will remain. They are fragile, and I now look at them as a gift from those who braved bombs and politics and conspired and took enormous risks to themselves in order to preserve them for us, and for those after us.D. Set in Italy, it portrays the struggle these dedicated men experienced in coping with the Germans trying to steal that country's art and the unusual efforts Italians had done to protect the treasures. Also describes how coping with military rules/regulations were handled. A good read for those who enjoy historical twists.

This has fascinating history of WWII. It is almost a study book as it is so filled with art history. You learn some about the men involved as well as their struggles to accomplish the goal of protecting the art treasures. The story of the suffering of the Italian people affected by the war is in the story also. I look forward to seeing the movie about this historical time period.

A thorough research of what happened to Italian art during WWII. Very tedious to read, so many names, places and dates. Very hard to keep track of who was who. Any WWII buff would love it. I did find interest in the history as I will be traveling sometime to Italy within the next few years and would love to go to Florence to see the only bridge that Hitler did not blow up.

I did not realize how close we came to losing so many works of great art during WWII, and that a group of officers had been designated to save and restore these priceless works of art, buildings, bridges, churches, etc. It also shows how people can work together to save the local culture and history just for the sake of preserving the culture without expecting anything in return. This is a story that has been quiet for too long.
