Steven ‘book a month’ Zaloga has here put together #231 of the Osprey New Vanguard series which focusses on the railway guns of World War 2. This book follows the basic premise of all this long running series of books in that it is quite concise, provides a basic overview of the topic at hand and then a step by step observation of some of the details. These books are great for the armchair military buff as they are usually replete with plenty of black and white photographs and a number of colour plates. This volume is no different, plenty of photographs being spread about through the book and the illustrations coming from Peter Dennis.The volume moves from a mere extended paragraph of an introduction and then delves straight into a discussion of French railway guns, thence onto the Belgians, the Germans, the Italians, the Soviets and thence to Finland, Japan, Britain and the US in that order. Tables of information are useful in terms of numbers and some of the technical data. Also some of the national entries contain some information regarding the use of the weapons in actual combat. The author isn’t wearing rose-coloured glasses in terms of his subject matter and discussion of some of the costs in terms of money and manpower are discussed. As are the chronic accuracy issues these large weapons seemed to suffer from.These New Vanguard books are great for modellers and the like given the number of photographs and drawings. And the question posed by this volume is will we be seeing a similar volume on railway guns of World War 1. It is to be hoped so as they would provide an interesting triptych when combined with the volume on Armoured Trains.If you have an interest in the subject at all but are not wanting to get one of the more specialised volumes on the market (check the bibliography) then this is a good work to get.

An excellent overview of all of the railroad guns used by all of the different nations in WWII. This is not an in-depth study of any particular gun, but a series of profiles of what each country had or built in the way of railway guns for WWII. This will not be that useful to people that have accumulated large amounts of specific data, but for someone just getting into railway guns, it is and EXCELLENT introduction, and will give a clear path to research for any particular railgun they may be interested in. I became interested in the German 28cm K5(E). guns built by Krupp and Hanomag, and this provided a LOT of explanations and information that I could use to begin my research.

Excellent osprey book on this subject covers each type of rail gun from design and operational use. Book has many pictures and is easy to follow and read. Each gun uses and deployment is covered and what happened to each type. Interesting book on the German uses of captured rail guns captured from the French.

All of Zaloga's books are great and this one is no exception. It gives coverage enough to let you decide which area you would want to investigate in depth.I am a railroad fanatic both in the real road and the hobby world. This book could be of interest to train lovers looking for something different to model.

Much less information than I hoped for. This thin book covers the railway guns of every nation. If it had been just on Germany it might have been about right. The drawing comparing the Dora to a K5 and a Tiger I was interesting.

Pretty good for a 48 - page book. It discusses German, French, Soviet / Russian, US, and British railway artillery and that of some relatively minor countries such as Finland, Italy, and Belgium. Perhaps not too surprisingly, the most detailed discussions are on German and French railroad artillery. There is also some fairly detailed discussion Russian / Soviet railroad artillery. The text covering British and American railroad artillery was pretty shallow, I thought. The coverage of Russian / Soviet artillery offers much new information that I had never read before, although photos of the major large caliber (305 mm) guns was sparse. My biggest disappointment was that the large caliber 340 mm, 370 mm, 400 mm, and 520 mm heavy French railroad artillery only received a few sentences of discussion and little information was offered on the performance characteristics of the either guns or the mountings. Very little information was provided on the American and British 14 - inch, 16 - inch, and 18 - inch artillery. Fortunately, other books exist that provide more detailed discussions of those guns.

A nice little overview of the Rail guns used in WW 2. I liked other books in this series, this one is no exception. From the giant DORA, an GUSTOV, to the famous Anzio Annie type the author covers the weapons by nation and type. Well written and illustrated, this book is a good edition to any WW 2 library.

My niece loves these books!

~4/5We don't get too much actual volleyball in this volume. The team has to prepare for the training camp in Tokyo, but first they have to deal with exams. And there are a good few who do not excel in school. Somewhat surprisingly, Kageyama struggles with school, and unsurprisingly so does Shoyo. They're both awful. But everyone works together to study and memorize and do their best on the coming finals.During this, we meet a new character. Yachi is a first year, and she's trying out for their manager, since the third-years will be leaving soon. She's very hesitant, but she's smart and crafty. I think she'll fit in rather well. Her and Shoyo are already forming a friendship, unsurprisingly.Kageyama and Shoyo get to meet the star of Shiratorizawa in this volume, and it's an odd stand-off. It leads to the training camp, where everyone is putting their all into being better. I was surprised that we're not getting too much actual in-game volleyball during this, but more character growth and relationship progression. Shoyo in particular seems to be taking a step forward.Another new character we meet is Ryunosuke's older sister. She's feisty and a fighter, and I like her. She gives Shoyo a surprising insight into the original “Little Giant”. I didn't actually put much thought into the two meeting at any point, but it seems to be hinted at a couple times here. That should be interesting, even if it doesn't happen for a while.I'm very into this series by this point. V9 gives us a reprieve from the intense volleyball prefectural tournament of the previous volume to focus on character development and evolution. This evolution spans both new characters as well as old characters. It was a well executed experience that made for actual swift reading.For new characters, Yachi was introduced as someone who naively followed Shimizu into exploring what the Karasuno volleyball club was about. Her quick interaction with her fellow first years was shown to seeming inspire her continue to pursue the club. Thankfully her interaction with Hinata brought about a moment of growth for Yachi which still, to this day, remains one of my favorite set of chapters in the manga (Villager B).For old characters, Hinata and Kageyama realized just how far they were behind the other teams. This was highlighted in a well executed set of panels in which they had a discussion with the best in their prefecture, Ushiwaka. Ushiwaka likened Karasuno to that of a barren cement plot, while other teams or individuals were a rich, lush bountiful garden full of flowers ready to be harvested. It was amazing.I think one of the best parts of this volume was the artwork. Furudate really hit it out of the park with the page spreads constantly. The panel with Ushiwaka was actually the most iconic in the volume. Another page spread with Hinata on the poster from Yachi was another extremely memorable and well drawn page, shame about the spine interrupting a few of these.Overall, the plot, both discussed here but also the parts not discussed (including the start of the next arc, a training camp) was on point. It moved at a great pace. It also showed that Furudate can keep the manga interesting even when the characters are not knee deep in a tournament.The art was amazing as well.~Extras this volume included the usual drawings and comments on the pages between chapters. Unfortunately there was no afterword or omake/bonus pages~

For a FCBD this was awesome! I loved the eclectic cast of characters. Some new, some old, some re-cast. Really great group. It's 10 pages longThe comic devoted more time to the younger generation of avenger wanna-bees, which I actually preferred. Kamala and Miles are two of my favorite characters and they get plenty of panel time here.We get to see how well these guys all work together and what they need to work on. There's plenty of action for the fanbois, but enough character development for me as well.I'm not an inhumans comic reader, but even I liked this one. It was straight forward and interesting. The ending totally freaked me out though. I know Johnny Storm is a player, but yeesh.

This was a promotional comic given away on Free Comic Book Day 2015. It has two stories in it. The first outing of a new group of Avengers and the start of the Inhumans.The good thing about this comic is that it does provide a nice introduction to the new series. But since the series really started in 2014, they are not really new. Also, these are are more teaser than full fledged stories. Since it is free (and new to me at least), I really enjoyed it. I like things like this since I no longer have a source of monthly comics convenient. It gives me a chance to look at a series without purchasing a graphic novel collection.

Definitely needs to be longer. When did comics become so short? Work it Mark! Oh, and thanks. Lol! Archie and Riverdale needed updating to the 21st century.

This book was a punch in the gut as a fifth grader nearly thirty years ago. As an adult it's a beating with a padlock in a sock. Just non-stop blow after blow because now after college English classes you know about things like foreshadowing and symbolism and dramatic irony and YOU SEE IT COMING FROM MILES AWAY AND CAN DO NOTHING TO STOP IT.I've read Martin. I'm used to not getting attached to vibrant, likable characters. But this still hits harder than the Red Wedding. Especially the aftermath. Because you're an adult now and your adult fears are different than your fears as a kid. This only heightens the contrast between Jesse's juvenile fear of falling into the creek and the reader's more mature fear of losing a loved one and makes the characters' pain stand out in that much more stark a contrast.And that's not even getting into the theme of "If I had only..." that Jesse struggles with when he wakes in the night. If I had only asked her. If I had only thought of someone else. If I had only seen what was right in front of me instead of yearning for that which I cannot have. We've all had those moments, and we've all thought of what we could have done differently. The stakes are not always as high, but we are terrifyingly aware that we don't know when they might be.The prose is exceedingly well-written. It's clear, almost matter-of-fact. Echoes of Narnia can be felt in Terebithia, especially in the Pine Grove. But the narrator never talks down to the reader. We see the world, and Leslie, through Jesse's eyes, but the story is far from childish. It doesn't pull its punches, but it takes care to show us beauty, too.It should still come with a warning label and a box of kleenex, though. Not gonna lie; at almost 40 this one broke me, and I ain't even ashamed.

Together, the two of them explore the woods behind Leslie’s house, and create the imaginary kingdom of Terabithia where they spend their days repelling invaders and building forts.The book has a very sweet, innocent, retro vibe to it, yet manages to feel timeless. As I was reading it, I was reminded of the movie My Girl starring Anna Chlumsky and Macaulay Culkin.I got even more of that vibe toward the end of the novel, and I think had I read this when I was in the targeted age group, I would have been shattered.Even now, I enjoyed the book and can definitely understand how it won the Newbery Medal. This is an extremely nice book. I was impressed with the story when I watched it on TV. I recorded it on my DVR and watched it again several months later. I bought the book knowing that the book would provide more depth to the story. I know that the story is written for for children but, as a mature elderly adult. I enjoyed it very much. The main character is a fifth grade eleven year old boy who is raised in a family with four sisters. He meets a new girl in his class who opens his mind to a world of imagination and when she dies he passes this world of imagination to his next younger sister who adores him. There is tragedy in the story but overall it is a heartfelt story.

In fact, I actually had to lie down for a while, to process what had happened.Bridge to Terabithia is all about friendship, understanding and coming of age. Jess starts out as a boy with the simple hope of wanting to be the fastest runner in his school, but through his friendship with Leslie, he begins to expand his world, taken in by the wild fantasies of Leslie's imagination.The only son in a family of five children, Jess is quite alone; old enough to understand that he has chores to be done, but young enough to dream big. When he makes a companion out of Leslie, it’s like a tribute to one’s own inner child. Didn’t we all have that friend that we would meet on the corner and play with at the park?The uncanny duo fit together like peas in a pod. It gives us hope that even a misunderstood boy in rural America can find the thing that they’ve been missing; the thing that will pull them out of the norm and into something more.This book has sense of adventure and a bit of sweet nostalgia (for the grown-ups). As a children’s book, it achieves a lot in terms of loss of innocence and coming of age, which I feel is quite appropriate (even required) for children growing up.It’s easy to forget some characters when you read many books, but then you get a book like Bridge to Terabithia; you have the wind knocked out of you, and you’ll likely never forget Jess and Leslie.

Now I own both manuals for my 1999 Honda Valkyrie. This Clymer manual and a Honda shop manual. There is no real comparison in picture quality, detail "exploded" views, and instruction steps between the two. The factory Honda manual is the by far superior pick. I can use the Clymer manual for comparison purposes but that's about it.

I purchased this book with the intention of maintaining my bike myself as much as possible. This book is filled with detailed photos of disassembled parts that make it so much easier to understand how to work on this bike, and the step by step descriptions help to instill confidence in the person that is considering working on their own bike.This manual helps to take the mystery out of working on one of these bikes, if you never have before. It covers basic maintenance procedures to in depth jobs such as synchronizing the carburetors to rebuilding the engine. It even gives maintenance frequency schedules, to let the owner know things like how often to change the oil, maintaining the throttle cables, brake systems maintenance, etc. I highly recommend this manual!

This manual fills in all the failings of the Valkyrie Owner's Manual. Even simple things like changing the headlight bulb and all the way to doing a valve adjustment are covered. Even though it adds a couple pounds, I'd take it along on trips - just in case.

Clymer has made a great book for Honda Valkyrie repairs. Many books do not have great detail or accompanying pictures. Clymer does it right and has great schematic drawings of the electrical are great and all the technical speak in the book are comprehensible to the layman. I'm glad I got this book and I would buy it again as a first choice.

If you do your own wrenching, then most likely you've used a Clymer manual before. If you're just starting out, treat yourself & spend the dough....it's money well spent.

Very odd that book references and appears to require a CD to use effectively yet there's no CD. Not sure why book is sold alone. Find it very confusing. Unfortunately both book 1 & 2 came the same way.

I've used many textbooks to teach English in my time, and this is one of the best American ones. It incorporates reading, writing, listening and speaking into every unit, tying the grammar to useful life skills and subjects. The subject matter's interesting and the activities varied and interactive. Highly recommended.

I use this book with refugees. It's colorful and clear, and introduces the learner to basic grammar, vocabulary, syntax, and asking questions.
